Introduction:

1. The Word of God is our guide as to the things we ought to do.

2 Timothy 3:16–17 NKJV
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

A. We have to listen and hear what it has to say.

Romans 10:17 NKJV
17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

B. Tonight’s topic on things we ought to do is...

1. To know how behave ourselves in the house of God.

1 Timothy 3:14–15 NKJV
14 These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; 15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

2. This is the very reason Paul wrote the book of First Timothy--to instruct him so he would know how to behave in the house of God.

A. Chapter one: God has enabled you for the ministry.

B. Chapter two: Living a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior.

C. Chapter three: Leadership has to be right.

D. Chapter four: Do not depart from truth.

E. Chapter five: Treat one another properly.

F. Chapter six: Do not be proud.

3. To know how to behave ourselves in the house of God, we need to listen to these six lessons from the book of First Timothy.

Body:

1. To know to how to behave ourselves in the house of God, we must understand God has enabled us for the ministry.

A. Paul tells Timothy how to be enabled by God through how God had enabled him.

1 Timothy 1:12–17 NKJV
12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, 13 although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 14 And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. 16 However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life. 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

1. God made it clear that He was enabling him. Vs. 12a

A. Paul recognized God enabling him.

1. God makes it clear when he enables us, and we have a responsibility to recognize it.

2. God counted Paul to be faithful and put him in the ministry. Vs. 12b

A. Paul accepted his ministry, even though he understood his past was sinful. Vs 13

1 Timothy 1:13 NKJV
13 although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
1. God places us in ministry if we are formerly a blasphemer.
1 Corinthians 6:12 NKJV
12 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
2. We need to accept our ministry.
1 Corinthians 9:16–17 NKJV
16 For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this willingly, I have a reward; but if against my will, I have been entrusted with a stewardship.

3. God showed Paul the reason he was enabled, and it was so he could enable others. Vs 16.

1. Paul accepted his responsibility to be a role model.

1 Corinthians 11:1 NKJV
1 Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.
A. We must accept our responsibility as a role model.
1 Timothy 4:12 NKJV
12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

2. To know to how to behave ourselves in the house of God, we must understand living a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior.

A. Paul tells Timothy how to live a quite and peaceable life by supplications, prayer, intercessions, and giving of thanks for all men.

1 Timothy 2:1–4 NKJV
1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

1. Pray for all men. Vs 1

James 5:16 NKJV
16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

A. Pray for your enemies.

Matthew 5:43–48 NKJV
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? 48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

B. Pray for your friends and their lives.

Proverbs 17:17 NKJV
17 A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.

C. Pray for both your physical and spiritual families.

Titus 2:1–8 NKJV
1 But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: 2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; 3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things— 4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. 6 Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7 in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.

2. Pray for all in authority.

Romans 13:1 NKJV
1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.

3. To know to how to behave ourselves in the house of God, we must understand that leadership has to be right.

A. Paul taught Timothy that we must have Godly leaders by giving us the qualifications.

1. Desire the position. 1 Timothy 3.1

1 Timothy 3:1a NKJV
1 This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work.

A. We must know how to treat elders where they desire the work.

1 Timothy 5:17 NKJV
17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.

2. Be blameless, not sinless.

Acts 22:16 NKJV
16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’

3. The husband of one wife.

Ephesians 5:25–27 NKJV
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.

4. Temperate or in control of one’s emotions.

Ephesians 4:25–27 NKJV
25 Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another. 26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil.

5. Sober-minded or in control of the ability to reason.

Isaiah 1:18 NKJV
18 “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.

6. Of good behavior or living right in God’s sight.

Romans 12:1–2 NKJV
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

7. Hospitable

Romans 12:9–13 NKJV
9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. 10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; 11 not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12 rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; 13 distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.

8. Able to teach

Matthew 28:18–20 NKJV
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

A. The results of an elder knowing how to make disciples is also the reason he can hold the congregation together.

Titus 1:9 NKJV
9 holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.

9. Not given to wine

A. Leaders cannot have their minds affected by alcohol.

Proverbs 31:4 NKJV
4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, It is not for kings to drink wine, Nor for princes intoxicating drink;

10. Not violent

Ephesians 4:26 NKJV
26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,

11. Not greedy for money

1 Timothy 6:10 NKJV
10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

12. Gentle

Galatians 6:1–2 NKJV
1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

13. Not quarrelsome

James 3:17 NKJV
17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.

14. Not covetous

Colossians 3:5 NKJV
5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

15. One who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence.

Ephesians 6:1–4 NKJV
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: 3 “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” 4 And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.

16. Not a novice

Hebrews 5:12–14 NKJV
12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

17. A good testimony among those who are outside.

Titus 2:6–8 NKJV
6 Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7 in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.

4. To know to how to behave ourselves in the house of God, we must understand that we cannot depart from truth.

A. Paul taught Timothy that we cannot depart from truth by showing him the results of departing from the truth.

1 Timothy 4:1–3 NKJV
1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, 3 forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

1. A result from departing from the truth is giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.

1 John 4:1 NKJV
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

2. A result of departing from the truth is speaking lies.

2 Thessalonians 2:9–12 NKJV
9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

3. A result of departing from the truth is having our conscience seared.

1 Peter 3:21 NKJV
21 There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

4. A result of departing from the truth is false teachings that cause all kinds of problems.

1. Forbidding to marry

Hebrews 13:4 NKJV
4 Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

2. Commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving.

Romans 14:1–3 NKJV
1 Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. 2 For one believes he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. 3 Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him.

5.To know to how to behave ourselves in the house of God, we must understand how to treat one another properly.

A. Paul taught Timothy by giving him a set of standards to live by.

1. Exhort the older men as fathers. Vs 1a

1 Timothy 5:1 NKJV
1 Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers,

2. Exhort the younger men as brothers. Vs 1b

1 Timothy 5:1 NKJV
1 Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers,

3. Exhort the older women as mothers. Vs 2a

1 Timothy 5:2 NKJV
2 older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity.

4. Exhort the younger women as sisters, with purity.

1 Timothy 5:2 NKJV
2 older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity.

5. Know how to treat the widows properly.

1 Timothy 5:3–4 NKJV
3 Honor widows who are really widows. 4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and to repay their parents; for this is good and acceptable before God.

6. Know how to treat the elders right.

1 Timothy 5:17–20 NKJV
17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. 18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer is worthy of his wages.” 19 Do not receive an accusation against an elder except from two or three witnesses. 20 Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear.

6. To know to how to behave ourselves in the house of God, we must understand that we cannot be proud.

A. Paul taught Timothy not to be proud by showing him we are all slaves and to reject God because you do not desire to be a slave is truly knowing nothing.

1 Timothy 6:1–5 NKJV
1 Let as many bondservants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and His doctrine may not be blasphemed. 2 And those who have believing masters, let them not despise them because they are brethren, but rather serve them because those who are benefited are believers and beloved. Teach and exhort these things. 3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, 4 he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, 5 useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.

1. “Let as many bodservants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy.”

A. Who does this statement not refer too.

Romans 6:16 NKJV
16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?

B. If we are not in Christ we are proud know truly nothing.

John 15:5 NKJV
5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

Conclusion:

1. As Paul Wraps-up 1 Timothy he gives us a summation of all the things we ought to do.

1 Timothy 6:6–8 NKJV
6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.

A. If you are not content with godliness then God has something great to offer you today.

1. And all you have to do is flee evil and pursue righteousness today and you can lay hold of eternal life.

1 Timothy 6:11–12 NKJV
11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
