2008-11-23 (am) Psalm 24:1-2, 7-9 Satisfaction

          In May 1965, The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards and Mick Jagger recorded the song, “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.  The song was penned as a protest against increasing commercialisation.

          43 years later, has anything changed?  Is that song irrelevant today?  Or is it more relevant today than ever before?

          How about you?  Can you find satisfaction?  Have you found satisfaction?  Does electra-sol get your dishes cleaner?  Does Tide give you pride to wear your whites?  Does your vehicle give you zoom zoom zoom?

          Do you find yourself thinking, “If I only had this or that, I’d be happy?  If only my husband would take out the garbage without being asked, my marriage would be perfect.  If only my church sang my favourite songs all of the time, I’d get some satisfaction.

          Are you looking for satisfaction?  Would you meaningfully sing along with the Stones’ ‘I can’t get no satisfaction’?

          Have you learned the lesson the apostle Paul learned?  “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.  I can do everything through him who gives me strength” (Phil. 4:12-13).

          What is the secret of contentedness in a world that consistently fails to deliver?

          The simple fact is this, the world cannot satisfy our deepest needs.  It is not as though the world isn’t satisfying at all, God’s creation is beautiful, amazing and full of wonders. 

          But what our hearts desire most is cannot be found in the world.  Our deepest desire is for God and God alone.

          Let me try to explain it by means of an analogy. 

          A guy walks up to his friend and says, “Hey!  I heard you got a girlfriend!  Way to go.”

          “Yeah, she’s pretty sweet.  You wanna meet her?”

          “Sure, where is she?”

          “She’s right here.”  The guy with the new girlfriend reaches into his pocket, pulls out a photograph and says, “Here she is, isn’t she amazing?”

          At this point his friend looks at him askance.  Looks at the picture, looks around the guy and says, “nice picture, who is she.”

          “Her name is Georgina, and she’s all mine.”

          To which he says, “Nice picture, when do I get to meet her in person.”

          Then the guy says, “Nah man!  This is her!  This is my girlfriend.  I, I think I’m in love!”

          Then the guy really looks at him like he’s crazy.  “Dude, that’s just a picture.  That’s not a real person.  You can’t be in love with a picture!”
