Intro

Proverbial sayings are built on some sort of truth, trying to convey some truth
“A watched pot never boils”
Yes it does
“The early bird catches the worm”
It also gets caught by the hawk
“A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”
Unless you shoot like I do
“First one thing then another”
“Personal things and one another”
“A couple of three”
2, 3, 5, 6????
Today, we are talking about truth. Remember that apologetics is being able to have a defense for your faith, and we should all know what we believe and why. We are living in what some call a ‘post-truth’ culture, and that dog won’t hunt. While there may be more than one way to skin a cat, there is only one truth. Let me tell you, then, how the cow ate the cabbage so the next time truth is attacked you won’t look like a calf staring at a new gate.

Questions to answer:

What is the truth?
What are those false truth claims?
How now shall we live?

Truth claims

There is no absolute truth
Would that be an absolute truth?
Many times people don’t realize the underlying truth of their statements or beliefs
Coexist, all religions worship the same god
This disrespects all religions
It all revolves around Jesus
Every other religion you can save yourself
Miracles are unscientific
Science started with an understanding of an orderly God
Unity is more important
Exactly what are we unifying with?

What is truth?

According to Google:
the quality or state of being true
that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality
a fact or belief that is accepted as true
"the emergence of scientific truths"
True - in accordance with fact or reality
Pocket Handbook of Christian Apologetics (Definition of Truth)
saying of what is that it is and of what is not that it is not
There are fundamental truths that go beyond a persons experience. A kid that jumps off the roof because they believe they can fly is going to fall to the ground.
Truth is not dependent on what you believe
Truth is deeper than what is perceived to be right and wrong
As we can see from this passage, you either seek truth or push it away
Foundational truth claims people have trouble confessing
There is one God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth
Some say there is no God or many gods
We have all sinned against Him
Some don’t like talking about sin, we are basically good
He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for our sin
Jesus is a pivotal figure, fully God & fully man
Jesus rose again
A real physical resurrection
Repentance, Through the blood of Jesus we have new life by the power of the Holy Spirit
We must repent
We cannot save ourselves
Not ‘what is truth?’ but ‘Who is truth?’
John 14:6 “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Scripture

John 18:37-38 “Then Pilate said to him, ‘So you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.’ Pilate said to him, ‘What is truth?’”

How now shall we live?

Truth and grace
Grace without truth is allowing evil to push you down it’s path
We won’t hurt anyone’s feelings by allowing them to march off the cliff
Truth without grace is unjust because grace is always a part of truth
To say, “You are a sinner and going to hell” is to only speak of half truth. The rest of the truth is that repentance is available and the blood of Jesus is for all who believe
Do not fear the darkness but carry the light in it
Lies fall in the face of truth
Darkness cannot overtake the light
All the world can do is plug their ears and scream
Some will see how to make it to the cross
