The Sabbath
the Pharisees have made rules concerning the Sabbath
in the Talmud there are 24 chapters on the sabbath
they are the things you have to do to be saved
you cant take a bath on the Sabbath because you might spill a drop of water on the floor and clean that spot
3000 feet from your home
God established the sabbath as a day of rest
a day to connect with the things of God
a day no work can be done by the ordinary Israelite
the priests on the other hand had to still perform their duties
God is saying enjoy the rest, I am commanding you to take the day off
The wilderness wanderings the manna on Friday morning that was gathered would last until Sunday
God told them to rest but also provided so that they can rest
Enjoy God’s creation
but Judaism has turned it into a great burden that no one could uphold
We have this saying TGIF
they have the same but its TGI Sunday
because Saturday has become so oppressive
Jesus continually came after their man made sacred things
Jesus did not try to sew a new patch on a old garment
He did not try to try to mix the new Covenant with the old
in fact He always attacked the man made religion of the Pharisees
And here Jesus is provoking the Pharisees by eating the grain

they were walking in the country
they were pulling and rubbing together, and eating the grain
as they walked along
“When you enter your neighbor’s standing grain, then you may pluck the heads with your hand, but you shall not wield a sickle in your neighbor’s standing grain.
and they could prepare food and eat it
‘Now on the first day there shall be a holy convocation, and on the seventh day there shall be a holy convocation for you; no work at all shall be done on them, except what must be eaten by every person, that alone may be done by you.
so the Ph. were against what God had said

??where were the Ph.?? their rules say no more that 3000 steps from their home
Jesus and His disciples are in a grain field
I guess their own rules don’t apply to them as long as they are attacking Jesus
Why Jesus are you going against the flow?
why cant we just get along ?
why cant we get to gether and find common ground?
this is what the world is trying to do
bring everybody to gether under 1 religion
well knowns like TD Jakes, Rick Warren,and Joel Osteen
are among those who want this.
Like I said last week Christianity is incompatible with other religions
Jesus is exclusive

Jesus is comparing what they are doing with what David did
David ate of the bread that only the priests were allowed to eat
the Priest made an executive decision to give the shew bread to David and his men
no where was David or the priest criticized for doing this
to love is better than sacrifice
the law is not so rigid that people go hungry obeying it
the problem with the Ph. is they did not care about the people
they cared about the legalistic rules

Jesus is telling them that He is the owner of the Sabbath
He is God who made the Sabbath
He is God who makes the rules about the Sabbath
He is God who rested on the first Sabbath
He is God who sits on His fathers throne
He is the Son Of Man who Daniel told them about who is going to return with the clouds and reign
Jesus is telling them He is the long awaited Messiah
Our day of rest happened when Jesus rose from the grave
we now rest in Him
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.
“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.
“For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
The pharisees put a unbearable burden onto people
Jesus on the other hand carried our sin burden onto the cross
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Jesus served us by giving His life as a ransom
our burdens are light because He is gentle and lowly
that is why we can rest in Him
The Hebrew word translated as “rest” means “to be at peace,” “to be still,” “to be quiet or calm.”
Psalm 37:7 (LSB)
Be still in Yahweh and wait patiently for Him;
turn to Hebrews 4 1-11
if you are a christian , a believer, born again you have entered this rest
but there is a sabbath rest still to come V 9
If you believe as I
Peter says a day to the lord is a thousand years
and you look at the 7 days of creation as prophetic
6 days of work 1 day of rest/the Sabbath
almost 6000 years have passed since creation
the Essenes have this year as 5945
and the last millennium 1000 years is the Sabbath V 9 10
are you looking forward to the Sabbath rest?
even though life now is hard
the aging body
the curse of work
the influences of satan
we can even now be spiritually at rest
God gives us the grace to be at rest IF we place our rest in Him
if we be still and patiently rest in Him
if we allow Jesus to carry the heavy part of the yoke
a lot of the times we are like this pulling life's burdens on our own
when we need to be more like this
Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath
our rest has to be in Him
Our Teacher is Jesus we follow Him
and we need to take His example
and do not compromise with other religions
do not put new wine into old skins
if you are not saved
you cant compromise anything with the Gospel of Jesus and be saved
Jesus gives rest from the burden of self righteousness
trying to keep the rules /Gods law
Jesus is exclusive He is the only way
only Jesus saves
Jesus died on the cross to be ransom for His people
His blood bought our freedom
the only way for the justice of God to be appeased against us is for Jesus to be our punishment
and salvation comes by putting our trust in the finished work of Jesus on the cross
will you do that today?
will you allow Jesus to be your rest?
