TOPIC

Should Christians watch scandal documentaries, listen to scandal podcasts and read “discernment blogs?”
Recently watched Hillsong Documentary on Hulu—The Secrets of Hillsong
I enjoyed The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill as much as the next guy
The question is—should we watch these things and are they good for our hearts?

1. Defend the wellspring.

Proverbs 4:23 ESV
Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
We should guard against the emotions of:
Discouragement
Deuteronomy 31:8 ESV
It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
Anger
Proverbs 16:32 ESV
Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.
Bitterness
Enmity
Jealousy
Galatians 5:19–21 ESV
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
We should guard against the behavior of:
Rivalries
Factions/Divisions
Strife
Check your own heart and ask why you are showing up for the information
Is it because you honestly need it or want it for some biblical purpose?
Is it because you want to watch the world burn?
If you heard there was going to be a Ravi doc, would you salivate?

2. Obey the Philippians 4 Rule

Philippians 4:8 ESV
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Think: The Greek word here means to think logically about something and to come to a conclusion through a process
We are talking about really chewing on something and getting in the weeds with it intentionally
Meditating upon it in the sense that you are filling your mind with it
And we are supposed to do that with things that are honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent and worthy of praise
There are times where in order to guard what is sacred, you need to know the threats on the horizon
Documentaries can help with that in the sense of information
But are we to dwell on them?
Are we to be consumed by them on social media for days?
I think it is tough to argue for it

3. Don’t project onto your local church.

Your pastor is minding his business
Prepping at least one message
Probably takes him 10-20 hours to do that
Praying for his flock
Visiting who he can
Probably didn’t have time to watch the new documentary and it probably doesn’t impact the church he pastors

4. Consider the source.

Is there an agenda?
Who made it?
Believer or unbeliever?
Are issues being conflated?
Are opportunities being taken to grind an ax?
Take a step out of the context of the documentary and think about what others say?
Sometimes documentarians are really good at finding the angriest people who will prove their point
Or sometimes, they are just showing raw truth
But not every documentarian is the same
Is someone always negative?
Do you know someone like that in real life who is godly?
Why would you assume these other people are godly and good sources?

2 Timothy 2:23 ESV
Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels.
