Matthew 5:13–16 KJV 1900
Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Salt

Romans 12:1–2 NASB95
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

“It is a well-known fact that the salt of this country [i.e. Palestine] when in contact with the ground, or exposed to rain and sun, does become insipid and useless. From the manner in which it is gathered [vide infra], much earth and other impurities are necessarily collected with it. Not a little of it is so impure that it cannot be used at all; and such salt soon effloresces and turns to dust—not to fruitful soil, however. It is not only good for nothing itself, but it actually destroys all fertility wherever it is thrown.… No man will allow it to be thrown on to his field, and the only place for it is the street; and there it is cast, to be trodden under foot of men.”

Psalm 34:8 KJV 1900
O taste and see that the Lord is good: Blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

Light

In contrast to the darkness of sin and the corruption of mankind, Jesus states that Israel was suppose to be a light to the world. And now through the New Covenant, those who have been redeemed by faith in Christ, are the light in the dark world.
Our light comes directly from Him
John 1:9–10 KJV 1900
That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
John 8:12 KJV 1900
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

You

First we must understand what Jesus means by referring to “a city set on a hill.” While this could just be an illustration to emphasize the divine truth Jesus is pointing out. the illustration has an origin. As Jesus was talking to people from Capernaum some believe that He was referencing that city. But I believe that Jesus was referring to the Holy City of Jerusalem.
Mount Zion.
We can also understand that through this illustration, that God designed you to be an influence everywhere you go.
Unsaved, reflect the human condition. The redeemed, reflect the divine nature. Not by keeping the law, but rather loving the Lord.
