A Change of Heads

Colossians 1:13-18

Having expressed his concern for the Colossians spiritual growth through prayer, Paul now focuses upon the agent of spiritual growth—Jesus Christ.  In a theologically rich discussion, the apostle describes the preeminent position God has given to Christ, dispelling all notions that Jesus is lesser than God in person, power, or position.  This paragraph addresses the position of Christ whereas the following paragraph provides the results of Jesus’ work and position.

Spiritual growth (vv. 9-12) is not achieved through mystical knowledge but through the powerful deliverance of God through Christ.

  1. Jesus delivers us from the dominion of darkness – 13-14

a.       We are delivered from a dark authority – 13

b.       We are delivered through Jesus’ blood – 14a

c.        Our deliverance results in forgiveness – 14b

  1. Jesus becomes our new head – 15-18

a.       Jesus is the image of God – 15a

b.       Jesus is preeminent over all things – 15b-18

    • Jesus is the firstborn over all creation – 15b

    • Jesus is the creator of all things – 16
    • Jesus is preeminent over all things – 17a
    • Jesus holds all things together – 17b
    • Jesus is the head of the church – 18
