What do I believe God wants them to know? True Freedom is found in Jesus by Standing, Abiding, Walking, Lay Aside, Living into Community
Why? We all want freedom
What do I believe God wants them to do? stand, abide, walk, lay aside, live in community
Why? We all want freedom
ME/WE
One of the things that is true of you and true of me and true of the whole is we are FREEDOM SEEKERS.
We all desire FREEDOM…no one says really hope I am oppressed, locked away, I really hope the my FREEDOM is ripped away from ME…we hated it when we were younger and we were wrestling with our friends or siblings and they put us in a headlock or locked us out of the house or room.
This is especially hightened for us AMERICANS “we are land of the free and the home of BRAVE…it is in our DNA as Americans....WE DON’T WANT TO BE ENSLAVED TO ANYTHING
FREEDOM IS ONE OF THE one of the 5 longings of the human heart…ACCORDING TO
FREEDOM
HOPE
MEANING
JOY/SATIFICATION
IDENTITY
FREEDOM IS ONE THE GREATEST DESIRES OF OUR HEARTS…no
THE QUESTION BEFORE US IS HOW DO WE GET FREEDOM? HOW DO WE GET FREE?
What do we need to do to get free???
EVEN THOUGH WE ARE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE AND HOME OF THE BRAVE
We are not always FREE
…and more importantly the scriptures write about FREEDOM in CHRIST
We are not always free
Do we always feel free or always free??? It is not just a feeling but a reality
The freedom we are talking about most often is not a physical FREEDOM but an internal FREEDOM
SO HOW DO WE SOLVE THIS? HOW COME TO A RESOLUTION WERE SLAVERY IS GONE AND FREEDOM IS HERE.
If we ask world they will respond with the....they start with the probelm with why they are not free....THE PROBLEM WHY WE ARE NOT FREE IS BECAUSE I AM TRYING TO FOLLOW MOM’S RULES, MY BOSSES RULES, GOD RULES…ANYBODY THOUGHT THIS WAY BEFORE
SO WHAT DO WE DO?
The way you get free is you need to create your own rules and own way to do things, that’s how you get free.
You cannot others determine the rules
They living by the WORDS that ELSA from the movie FROZEN spoke:
"It's time to see what I can do; to test the limits and breakthrough! No right, no wrong, no rules for me! I'm free!"
Is this not the American mantra??
This sounds nice....but does it work?
NO
Why?
Here’s the problem…what do we discover…anybody try this? I am not listening to MOM, GOD instructions?
FREEDOM COMES FROM NO RULES:
We set rules that contrict and restrict our FREEDOM
For example if decided not to follow the rules and regulations of God’s design for your body in regards to food…I am going to eat whatever I want, whenever I want as I often as I want and I am going to skip sleep....what happens? Our food freedom brings bodies restriction…our bodies cannot do what they once did…The ultimate freedom with food brings a restriction with our body
We see this in MARRIAGE where a person says or does live like a single person…If I want to go out with the boys, I will go out with the boys. If I want to spend money on ___, I will spend money on…I make the money…how is the marriage going to go? That person might eventually be FREE not to be married
What about freedom with the law…I will just do what I want…SPEED, NOT PAY MY TAXES, STEAL (I mean I want that so I should have it…what happens you GET FINED OR GO TO JAIL
If we decided to live within our RULES and VALUES to be FREE…not GOD’s VALUES…guess what we don’t get??? FREEDOM
HOW MANY OF US HAVE TRIED THIS??
Adam and Eve did it in the garden
SO IF FREEDOM IS NOT FOUND IN LICENSES “DO WHAT YOU WANT WHEN YOU WANT”
WHERE IS FREEDOM FOUND?
Jesus
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
BUT WHAT IS HE SETTING US FREE FROM: What is enslaving us
What is it that enslaves you and me and the world: SIN
That 3 letter word, that is not popular with our world sin.
But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed,
and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
Sin brings slavery
ANYBODY BEEN ENSLAVED BY SIN
The reason you’re not free, I am not free is because of sin
Now we know the problem…what is the solution?
How do we get free from SIN?
What do we need to do get FREE from the ENSLAVEMENT OF SIN
What do we need to DO TO BRAKE THE POWER OF SIN IN OUR LIFE
THERE IS AN ULIMATE POWER OF SIN
PRESENT POWER OF SIN
THE ULTIMATE POWER OF SIN NEEDS TO BE BROKEN BEFORE WE CAN BREAK THE PRESENT POWER OF SIN
SCRIPTURES SHOW US THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO TO BREAK THE ULTIMATE POWER OF SIN IN OUR LIFE…THE WAR WE HAVE WITH SIN THAT BRINGS DEATH AND SHAME. DEATH
THAT’S BAD NEWS THAT THE ULTIMATE POWER OF SIN
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN…WHAT DOES THAT DO
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
THE GREAT EXCHANGE
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
IN AN OF YOURSELF YOU CANNOT DEFEAT THE POWER OF SIN…they is no amount of work you can do
Though you cannot do it, Jesus did

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE PRESENT POWER OF SIN
For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.
The question that still remains for us is that the WAR with sin is OVER…but the battle while we are on this EARTH remains....how do we defeat sin now?
We believe in Jesus but SIN still is enslaving me from now or from time to time....how do we have FREEDOM no
ANYBODY EVER ASK THIS QUESTION?
Yes, I am a child of God....I have been set free but I don’t feel so free
Why is that and how do we get free?
This is what the scriptures want to address because we are not the only ones who struggle with this.
1. STANDING ON THE GOSPEL…that we are saved by grace
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?

WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
There is interesting thing that can sometimes happen in the church, I have been here, some of you have been here, the church of Galatia is there....
We move from LICENSE to THE SIN OF LEGALISM....that it is Jesus plus ___, Jesus plus dressing a certain way, Jesus plus not dancing, Jesus plus reading this version of the Bible Jesus plus not drinking, Jesus plus following all the commandsment that are meant to give you life NOW ARE LEADING TO DEATH
ANYBODY THOUGHT THIS WAY OR LIVED THIS WAY?
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
What was happening in the Galatian church was they were saying to have ultimate freedom you need to ALSO follow the Jewish laws and regulations....It is Jesus plus
PAUL SAYS NO…IT IS JUST JESUS....and when you make your ultimate freedom JESUS PLUS you get slavery not FREEDOM
I grew up in a church like that…it is Jesus plus wearing a suit, not cursing, not drinking, not dancing, hymns only
Is that true??? NO....it is just Jesus that brings us salvation and freedom
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
LEGALISM CAN BE THE SIN THAT BRINGS US SLAVARY THOUGH IT LOOKS LIKE A GOOD JACKET
So does that mean we don’t need to follow the instructions of God? Not for your ultimate freedom salvation, no…because no one can live up to it but for YOUR PRESENT freedom on earth yes
This is a huge difference.
WE NEED TO ABDIE BY THE WORD TO HAVE FREEDOM ON EARTH
ABIDE
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,
and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
What the word of God says for us to have freedom on EARTH, in the earthly battles is by abiding…(means remaining) in the truth of God
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
We follow the WORD OF GOD wherever it leads because it is the path that leads to LIFE and FREEDOM
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.
For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
If you abide by this book not as a legalist, but as a son and daughter...
if you listen to the instructions of the LORD to avoid SIN…avoid GOSSIP, SLANDER, SPEAKING OFFENSIVE WORDS ABOUT PEPOLE, DEBATURY
and do the oppsite…WHAT’S THE OPPOSITE??
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
There is not law YOU WILL BE FREE
NOT only will you be FREE but you will also be FRUITFUL
John 15:5 (ESV)
Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
GOD’S WORD SAYS FREEDOM COMES
STANDING ON THE GOSPEL (PREACHING TO OURSELVES EVERYDAY BECAUSE WE FORGET)
ABIDING IN THE WORD OF GOD
WALKING BY THE SPIRIT
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
Where the Spirit is FREEDOM
How so? The Spirit by definition is FREEDOM and it will always lead to freedom
We see this in Gal 5:16-23 after Paul tells them to go away from legalism
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,
idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,
envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Do you see what Paul says....walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh…the flesh is where SIN
LAY ASIDE SIN AND LIVE IN COMMUNITY
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
There are some sins that we think are our friends that need to be killed
LIVE IN COMMUNITY
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,
not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
