Lest We Forget

We will never forget!

9/11 Was nearly 22 years ago. Have we forgotten?
What happens when we forget?
We lose the value of the past.
Why is it so easy to forget from generation to generation?
Our culture has taught us to think that we are the center of our own universe. Your struggles, your desires, your dream, your opinions, your way of doing things is all that matters.
This self focus means that stories of heroism only matter when they are about me. Stories of bravery and self sacrifice only matter when they impact me. Stories of faith and lives that overcome only matter when they are about me.
Often we have failed to teach our children to serve as Christ served. We fail to raise them up with a love for God and others. When we fail in this, it reflects a problem in us.
Our problem is that we fail to live according to the Word of the Lord. We fail to highlight it in all we do and say. We fail to obey him and place our opinions over his word. We teach our kids to do what we say instead of what He says. We buy into the lie that we are doing well and that we have somehow earned this right of authority when it was God who gave us the strength and ability to do it all.
How then do we insure that we never forget. I’m not talking about 9/11, I'm talking about the Word and the work of the Lord in our lives. This is our challenge today. To put into our lives patterns of discipline, heart level commitments, and firm resolve so that we never forget.
This is where we find Israel. Moses is warning them one more time to not forget all that the Lord has done for them.
Joe preached last week on Deuteronomy 8:1-10 which focuses on the blessing that comes when we remember and live in the commands of the Lord.
This week we will be finishing up chapter 8 and our focus is on the judgment that comes to those who forget God and do things their own way.

Read
Deuteronomy 8:11–20 ESV
11 “Take care lest you forget the Lord your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today, 12 lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them, 13 and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, 15 who led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock, 16 who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end. 17 Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ 18 You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day. 19 And if you forget the Lord your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish. 20 Like the nations that the Lord makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the Lord your God.

Do not Forget

His Commands

Deuteronomy 8:11 ESV
11 “Take care lest you forget the Lord your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today,

His Provision

Deuteronomy 8:12 ESV
12 lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them,

His Blessings

Deuteronomy 8:13 ESV
13 and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied,

His Powerful Care

Deuteronomy 8:14–16 ESV
14 then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, 15 who led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock, 16 who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end.

Do not Believe

In your own might.

Deuteronomy 8:17–18 ESV
17 Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ 18 You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

In other Gods.

Deuteronomy 8:19 ESV
19 And if you forget the Lord your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish.

You will escape God’s judgment.

Deuteronomy 8:20 ESV
20 Like the nations that the Lord makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the Lord your God.

Do not Be

Like the rich young ruler

Luke 18:18–23 ESV
18 And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’ ” 21 And he said, “All these I have kept from my youth.” 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 23 But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.

Without Hope

Luke 18:24–30 ESV
24 Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, “How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” 27 But he said, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” 28 And Peter said, “See, we have left our homes and followed you.” 29 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life.”

We Will Not Forget

We will not forget:
To do what God commands
To humbly serve others
