 Announcements

Call to Worship

Lord, we have stubbornly followed our own evil hearts; we have rebelled against you, the Lord our God; we have not obeyed your voice.

Create in us clean hearts, O God.

According to your abundant mercy, blot out my transgressions.  Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin!

Create in us clean hearts, O God.

Your heart is a heart of love and compassion, O God.  We wish to be motivated by your heart, O Lord.

Create in us clean hearts, O God.

You know the secrets of our hearts and all our hidden thoughts.  Give us a thirst for your Spirit.

We believe in your promise: Out of our hearts shall flow rivers of living water.

*Invocation (Lord’s Prayer)         st. Anne CM

Lord Jesus, you draw near us

  In garb of human flesh,

An earthly form, to cheer us,

  To kindle faith afresh.

Your body for us broken

  On the accursed tree

Becomes a sacred token

  Of glory yet to be.

Prayer

1

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen   st. Anne CM

Enfold us, precious Savior,

  Within your loving heart.

Assure us of your favor

  That we may never part.

O Word-made-flesh, forever

  Your name shall be adored.

Oh, let us cherish ever

The heart of Christ, our Lord.

Psalm for Today                               st. Anne CM                                                    Psalm 51

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgression.

Lord, look with mercy on my heart;

There let your will be seen.

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

Lord, let me ne’er from you depart

But be restored, made clean.

You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.

Lord, look with mercy on my heart;

There let your will be seen.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit.

Lord, let me ne’er from you depart

But be restored, made clean.

Old Testament Scripture Reading                                                Jeremiah 3:12-18

12 Therefore, go and give this message to Israel This is what the Lord says:  “O Israel, my faithless people, come home to me again, for I am merciful. I will not be angry with you forever.  13Only acknowledge your guilt. Admit that you rebelled

against the Lord your God and committed adultery against him by worshiping idols under every green tree. Confess that you refused to listen to my voice. I, the Lord, have spoken!

14 “Return home, you wayward children,” says the Lord, “for I am your master. I will bring you back to the land of Israel—one from this town and two from that family—

from wherever you are scattered. 15And I will give you shepherds after my own heart,

who will guide you with knowledge and understanding. 16“And when your land is once more filled with people,” says the Lord, “you will no longer wish for ‘the good old days’ when you possessed the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant. You will not miss those days or even remember them, and there will be no need to rebuild the Ark. 17In that day Jerusalem will be known as ‘The Throne of the Lord.’ All nations will come there to honor the Lord. They will no longer stubbornly follow their own evil desires. 18In those days the people of Judah and Israel will return together from exile in the north. They will return to the land I gave their ancestors as an inheritance forever.

Pastoral Prayer

Let us pray for the whole body of Christ and for all people according to their needs.

For all the nations of the world, that your heart of love and mercy will dwell in the midst of all people, let us pray to the Lord.                      Lord, have mercy.

For your body, the church, that it will be the fulfillment of your love in the world, let us pray to the Lord.                                                                      Lord, have mercy.

For our congregation, that we may love one another as you have loved us, that we may be one with you as you are one with the Father, and that our pastor may be a shepherd after your own heart, let us pray to the Lord.

                                                                                      Lord, have mercy.

For the sick (especially...), that your compassion will reach their need and give them health in body, mind and spirit, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy

Into your care, O Lord, we entrust all for whom we pray, believing in your mercy, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.                                 Amen.

The heart of Christ, our brother

  Who reigns in heav’n above,

Moves us to love each other

  With Spirit-given love.

May we, such grace receiving,

Become, with one accord,

In all our daily living

The Body of the Lord.

“The Body of Christ”

Epistle Reading ... ............                                             Hebrews 8:8-12

8 But when God found fault with the people, he said: “The day is coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. 9This covenant will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and led them out of the land of Egypt. They did not remain faithful to my covenant, so I turned my back on them, says the Lord. 10But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 11And they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying, ‘You should know the Lord.’  For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already. 12And I will forgive their wickedness,

and I will never again remember their sins.”

With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments. Martyrdom CM      Lord, look with mercy on my heart;

There let your will be seen.

Lord, let me ne’er from you depart

But be restored, made clean.

Gospel Reading ...                                                                                         John 11:17-44

17When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days. 18Bethany was only a few miles down the road from Jerusalem, 19and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss. 20When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house. 21Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.”  23Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.”  24“Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.”  25Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. 26Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?”  27“Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.” 28Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.” 29 So Mary immediately went to him.

30 Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him. 31 When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there. 32 When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.”  33 When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and

4

he was deeply troubled. 34 “Where have you put him?” he asked them.  They told him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Then Jesus wept. 36 The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!” 37 But some said, “This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?”  38 Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance. 39 “Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them.  But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.”  40 Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” 41 So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me. 42 You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.” 43 Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!”
