Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be filled with the Spirit of God. Many Christians know the joy of being sealed with the Spirit but lack the joy of being filled with the Spirit. Today we will look at the greatest example in Acts 2 to see if we can glean some insight into the Spirit filling us for the gospel ministry in front of us.

Introduction:
The Spirit is moving today. The Spirit has been moving since the beginning of creation.
Genesis 1:2 ESV
2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
It was the Spirit that restored the Earth.
It was the Spirit that first breathed life into the dust of the Earth and Man became a living soul.
It is in the Spirit that “we live and move and have our being.”
When Adam and Eve rejected God in the garden, the Spirit left them and they died: spiritually, physically, and emotionally.
But the Spirit kept moving. The redemptive plan of God was placed into motion. That at the appointed time God would breath life into humanity once again.
Through the Spirit, God would redeem and regenerate every lost soul that wanted to be saved. They would become his sons and his daughters once again.
The movement of the Spirit is very calculated and precise.
The Spirit of God is moving today, in this place. Some of you felt him on the inside as the Spirit bears witness with the Spirit in others. Some of you felt him on the outside as the Spirit is drawing you into a love relationship with God through his people.
There were 120 disciples of Christ waiting for the coming of the Spirit in their lives. The mighty power of God that would redeem souls, change lives, and turn the world upside down. The Day of Pentecost has come and the Spirit of the harvest is coming upon them. Now the waiting is over.
Turn with me in your Bibles to Acts 2.

The Spirit’s Movement is Right on Time.

Acts 2:1 ESV
1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.

From Passover to Pentecost

The Passover (Nisan 14th)

Leviticus 23:4–5 ESV
4 “These are the appointed feasts of the Lord, the holy convocations, which you shall proclaim at the time appointed for them. 5 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight, is the Lord’s Passover.
A male lamb without spot or blemish was sacrificed.
Jesus is the Lamb of God slain for the sins of all humanity.
John 1:29 ESV
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

The Feast of unleavened Bread (Nisan 15th)

Begins the day after passover.
The time Jesus died and was buried according to the scriptures.
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 ESV
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,

The Feast of First Fruits

Leviticus 23:10–11 ESV
10 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you come into the land that I give you and reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest, 11 and he shall wave the sheaf before the Lord, so that you may be accepted. On the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it.
The Sheaf Offering was waved the Sunday after Passover.
The First Fruits offering is the resurrection of the Lord.
1 Corinthians 15:21–23 ESV
21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.

The Feast of Weeks (7 Sabbath from the Sheaf offering + 1 Day)

Leviticus 23:15–16 ESV
15 “You shall count seven full weeks from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering. 16 You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath. Then you shall present a grain offering of new grain to the Lord.
Pentecost is the Greek word for 50th.
Pentecost was an offering of new grain to the Lord signifying early harvest had begun.
Pentecost marked the beginning of the New harvest of souls through the resurrection in the Spirit.
Matthew 9:37–38 ESV
37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
Summary Statement:
Jesus, our Passover Lamb, was crucified without sin (unleavened), and was resurrected as the firstfruits offering unto God. He was seen by over 500 people for the next 40 days until time for the new harvest to begin. He ascended on high to send the Holy Spirit at Pentecost to usher in the harvest through the believers.

The Spirit’s Method Advances the Kingdom.

The Coming of the Spirit

Acts 2:2 ESV
2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

“Like” a Mighty Rushing Wind

Texas tornados sound like a freight train.
The Children of Israel knew the Might rushing wind.
Exodus 13:21–22 ESV
21 And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. 22 The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people.
Jesus described the Spirit as the wind.
John 3:8 ESV
8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

Feel the effects of the Spirit in your life.

The Filling of the Spirit

Acts 2:3–4 ESV
3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

“As” Fire of divided tongues

Picture in your mind the Spirit as a fire entering the room and then dividing himself on every person in the room.

“As” the Spirit gave the utterance

The Spirit was reversing the curse of the Tower of Babel.
Where there was confusion the Spirit brought clarity.

The Reason for the gift of the Spirit

Acts 1:8 ESV
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

The Audience

Acts 2:5–6 ESV
5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.

The Amazement

Acts 2:11–12 ESV
11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”

The Apprehension

Acts 2:13 ESV
13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”
Since that day of Pentecost the Spirit has been bringing in a harvest for the Lord through the filling of believers. Today we are the witness of the salvation work of Christ and the regeneration work of the Holy Spirit.
The mighty works of God are all around you. Will you stand in amazement and receive forgiveness and salvation or will you mock the Spirit as those filled with new wine?
