David’s Grief (2 Sam 19:1-8)

A victory turned to grief (1-3)
Joab’s callous advice (4-7). Joab: speak to the heart of your servants (7).
David sits at the gate in Mahanaim (8). Same gate where he issued the order not to hurt Absalom.
Sometimes we can be like Joab to the grieving. You ought to be doing X by now. You should be over it.
It can be helpful for the grieving to socialize; Joab does encourage that.

David’s restoration (2 Sam 19:9-16)

The people of Israel are debating what to now that David is gone (9-10)
David approaches the leaders of Judah (11-12)
David appoints Amasa to replace Joab. (13). Amasa had sided with Absalom (2 Sam 17:25)
Shrewd political move to unite the country, especially Judah, who was also divided over David (14)
David begins the journey back to Jerusalem (15)

David and Shimei (2 Sam 19:16-23)

Shimei approaches David (16)
Shimei was a relative to Saul and cast stones at David (2 Sam 16:5-14)
He has 1000 Benjamites with him and Ziba (17)
They fall before David (18)
Shimei confesses wrong (19-20)
David acts with mercy toward him (21-23). David will give Solomon instructions about him (1 Kings 2:36-46). Mercy does not always indicate trust.

David and Mephibosheth (2 Sam 19:24-30)

Mephibosheth was Saul’s grandson (2 Sam 9:3).
Ziba had deceived him and did not go with David (2 Sam 16:1-4)
His loyalty to David is shown in his failure to practice hygiene (24)
2 Thess 5:21

David and Barzillai (2 Sam 19:31-39)

Barzillai helped David at Mahanaim (2 Sam 17:27-29)
David wanted to reward him with a seat at his table
Barzillai would rather to die at home
Contentment (Phil 4:11; 1 Tim 6:6)

David and Seeds of Division (2 Sam 19:40-43)
