Transcript
Romans 16 is written to real men and women of the faith. They were Christians who knew what God wanted and were doing what God wanted with their lives. They were living with purpose and a focus of lasting worth.
Their names are recorded and read by millions around the globe - constantly. They did something right.
Romans is shouting to the world, “I know the path to right living before God, the creator of heaven and earth! Pay close attention, think deeply about what is being said and you will have what you need to live a life that has eternal value.”
25 Now to him who is able to establish you in accordance with my gospel, the message I proclaim about Jesus Christ, in keeping with the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, 26 but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all the Gentiles might come to the obedience that comes from faith—27 to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.
That is why I felt it important to hit on the subject of regeneration. Of the importance of being born into the family of God spiritually - only then will it even be possible to get what Romans is saying for us to do and be.
That is why it is important for us to test ourselves to see if we are of the faith.
Romans overview
Paul wrote the letter to the Church in Rome.
1. Jews
2. Gentiles
Unique because of the large quantity of doctrinal teaching.
1. House rules
a. Don’t wear shoes on the carpet
b. Ask before you eat anything or open the refrigerator
c. Do not enter certain rooms of the house without being invited
d. Who oversees and assigns certain tasks?
This makes the house run more smoothly. If people come under the leadership of the owner of the home, things go well. If anyone rebels against the owner, there is trouble and discord throughout the house.
Who said they get to make all the rules? The name on the deed! They paid for it, so they get to set the house rules.
The same is true for the Church. Christ established it, so He gets to establish how things are to operate and function.
Jesus is not a horrible leader of the house!
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.
2. The Body of Christ, the Church, is the house of God on earth.
Romans is a great source to learn the house rules and operations so as to maximize the relationship with God and other people.
This letter Paul wrote to the Roman Church was one of the main sources studied to develop the Apostles Creed.
D. His confidence (1:16–17): Paul expresses his full assurance in the power of the gospel to accomplish two things.
1. To bring about saving faith for sinners(1:16): Through faith a sinner may be saved.
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
2. To bring about sanctifying faith for saints(1:17): Through faith a righteous person may have life.
17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”
Empowerment of Regeneration
Empowers a person to live a life of faith.
Hebrews 11:6 (NIV)
6 And without faith it is impossible to please God,
Empowers a person to offer an acceptable offering to God
Paul urges his readers to make their bodies living sacrifices for the glory of God.
I. The Believer and Self (12:1–2)
A. What we are to offer (12:1): Bodily dedication.
1. The reason for this (12:1b): It is to be done because we have experienced God’s mercy.
2. The results of this (12:1a): God is pleased if we offer a living and holy sacrifice.
B. What we are to avoid (12:2a): Worldly contamination.
C. What we are to achieve (12:2b): Godly transformation.
Paul and the Power of the Gospel(16:25–27)
Empowerment of Regeneration
Empowers a person to be alive and growing in the Spirit of God.
A. It has the power to strengthen saints.
