Lessons for the Entire Church

LESSONS FOR THE ENTIRE CHURCH

Titus 2:1-10

Many today say that they have done all they are going to do in the Church.  I have heard some say that they have fulfilled their duties to the church and they would like someone else to do their jobs now.  According to these Scriptures today, everyone, no matter how old, must do church work or young you are.  Let us examine these verses of Scripture and see some Lessons for the Entire Church

LESSONS FOR OLDER MEN:                                             Verses 1-2

1.      Speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine

2.      Be Sober:  Greek word used here is for sound minded—No Drinking

3.      Reverent:  KJV-Grave:  Honorable or Honest

4.      Temperate:  curbing one’s desires and impulses, self-controlled

5.      Sound in Faith:  Strong in the Faith

6.      Sound in Love:  Godly Love

7.      Sound in Patience:  Endurance

LESSONS FOR OLDER WOMEN:                                      Verse 3

1.      Reverent in Behavior:  becoming of holiness

2.      Not  Slanderers:  accusing falsely, talking about someone

3.      Not given to much wine:  Those who are enslaved to drinking

4.      Teachers of Good Things: Both by example and precept

LESSONS FOR YOUNGER WOMEN:                                Verses 4-5

1.      To love their husbands, to love their children: it being natural for young women to love their husbands and children, these precepts seem not so much to concern the things, as the manner of it, to love them as they ought to love them.

2.      The Word “Admonish” is used:  To instruct; advise; warn.  It is where we get our Greek word Nouthetic.

Verse 5

3.      To be discreet:  curbing one’s desires and impulses, self-controlled

4.      To be Chaste:  Modest, pure from carnality

5.      To be Homemakers:  Caring for the house and Home

6.      To be Good:  Upright and honorable

7.      To be Obedient:  under subjection

8.      That the Word of God may not be Blasphemed:  to be evil spoken of

LESSONS FOR YOUNGER MEN:                                       Verse 6

The only thing that is mentioned for the young men is to be Sober Minded.  Why?

1.      The hopes of the church depend much on them

2.      A young man, who cannot govern himself, gives little promise of being useful or happy

3.      Indulgence in natural inclinations to which young men are prone, will, eventually, bring ruin to the young man

4.      Since he is in training to Leadership, he must guard himself from all the indulgence of this world

LESSONS FOR THE PASTOR:                                            Verses 7-8

The Pastor must show himself to be an example of good works in the following:

1.      In doctrine showing uncorruptness (Integrity);  preaching not rotten, but sound doctrine; and doing it with authority

2.      And Gravity or Reverence:  the characteristic of a thing or person which entitles to reverence and respect, dignity, majesty, sanctity, in honor and Purity.

3.      And in Sincerity or Incorruptibility

Verse 8

4.      He is to preach and speak in Sound Speech that cannot be condemned:  that everything he says will be of good speech where no one can condemn him of what he says

5.      That one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.  That the adversaries of the truth may be ashamed of their aspersing them or it and may have no evil thing to charge them with.

LESSONS FOR SERVANTS:                                                            Verses 9-10

The Servant or Christian Slave is to be the following;

1.      They are to be obedient to their own masters:  In other words, they should follow the leadership of those appointed over them.  We do not see this in the church much anymore.

2.      To Please their masters in all things:  To do what they can to be pleasing to those placed over their charge

3.      Not answering back or again:  not saucily replying when they were reproved, nor contradicting the commands of their masters

Verse 10

4.      Not Pilfering (KJV Not purloining):  the word signifies taking something away from others to our own use, and it signifies properly the taking not the whole, but a part of a thing; it is used to signify the sin of Ananias and Sapphira, who kept back part of what they sold their estate for, Acts 5:2,3.

5.      But showing all good fidelity; honesty, and truth, and diligence

6.      That they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things;  that they may not be a scandal or reproach to the gospel to which they make a profession, but may be an ornament to it in all things, as remembering that it is the doctrine of God our great Preserver, and of Jesus Christ our blessed Saviour.

Closing:  I pray these simple lessons have helped you to understand that everyone and I do mean everyone, has a place in the church and that there is much work to be done. From the oldest to the youngest, God has a plan and a purpose for all.
