The last few classes we have looked at “For heaven’s sake” the What and the who, last week we started into the “why.” Today we will continue with that.
The who: was everyone
The what: was the government
The first part of why: they were the authority as given by God
This morning I want to pick up where we left off.
Why: For loves sake (Rom13:8-10)
Why: for Jesus sake (Rom13:11-14)
And if get to it, an intro into Romans 14.
Why? For Loves Sake? (Rom13:8-10)
8 Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. 9 For this, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
Have you heard love covers a multitude of sins (1Pt4:8)? Do you think that would include rebelling against our government?
Love keeps no record of wrong (1Cor13:5); love is the fulfillment of the law (Rom13:8-10)
Owing nothing does not mean never lend or borrow, but it does mean with a clear conscience you are to pay back. If you love your neighbor you will pay your neighbor back .
(Transition) the final appeal by Paul is to the lord himself. The Law cannot change a heart, it is only by God’s grace a heart can be changed. So the final appeal is for Jesus sake.
Why? For Jesus sake (Rom13:11-14)
11 Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed. 12 The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.
13 Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.
What did Paul know? He knew the day of the Lord was coming and gave some admonishments to the fact of it.
To wake up - (1The4:1-11; Mt25:1-13)
You have received instructions, so wake up and walk in them and please God; do this, don’t do that (1the4:1-11 passage); oh, and do it while attending to your own business and do it while living a quiet life.
Be prepared for you do not know when the bridegroom is going to come, don’t be a fool, be prepared, be ready for you do not know the hour or the day. (Mt25:1-13 passage)
Clean up - (1Jn2:23-3:3)
Don’t deny, remain in the truth, do not draw back from Him in shame, hold onto the hope, and everyone who has this hope purified himself just as he himself is pure
Now it is to put on (Rom13:14)
14 But take up the weapons of the Lord Jesus Christ, and stop paying attention to your sinful nature and satisfying its desires.
Take up the weapons, put on the lord, make no provision for the flesh, give no attention to the sinful desires, the sinful nature of the flesh, its lusts. For heavens sake!
Now I want to take a few minutes this morning and take a look at the next section of scripture that Paul addresses that should stop much division within the body of Christ. It was happening then, and it can happen today.
First let’s read the passage, then do a quick overview of it, answer some questions about it and then next week we will get into the passage it self
Introduction to Rom14:1-13
1 Now accept the one who is weak in faith, but not for the purpose of passing judgment on his opinions. 2 One person has faith that he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats vegetables only.
3 The one who eats is not to regard with contempt the one who does not eat, and the one who does not eat is not to judge the one who eats, for God has accepted him.
4 Who are you to judge the servant of another? To his own master he stands or falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.
5 One person regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind.
6 He who observes the day, observes it for the Lord, and he who eats, does so for the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who eats not, for the Lord he does not eat, and gives thanks to God.
7 For not one of us lives for himself, and not one dies for himself; 8 for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.
9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. 10 But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.
11 For it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall give praise to God.” 12 So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God.
13 Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather determine this—not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother’s way.
How often do we want people to think the way we think, or do things the way we do things?
We can dispute over the smallest things like the color of paint, the color of carpet, or even elevate one day of the week over another. This passage covers that, as well as food items.
BROTHERS IN CHRIST PICTURE INSERTED HERE
This passage calls for grace, and not passing judgment on each other and a reminder that we are brothers in the faith with the same destination heaven due to our faith.
The law of liberty gives grace to
Receive the the weaker (newer) brother in faith (vv.1-2)
Don’t judge for we are not the judge (vv.3-4)
Don’t judge on matters of conscience (vv.5-6)
Don’t judge for live or die we do it as unto the Lord (vv.7-9)
Don’t judge our brother because we will stand in judgment before the Lord (vv.10-12)
Don’t use your Christian liberty to stumble your brother (v.13)
