12 Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have.
13 I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder,
14 since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.
15 And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.
16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,”
18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.
19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,
20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation.
21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
What do you want them to say at your funeral?
How do you want to be remembered?
What do you want people to know?
What do you expect people to do?
Today’s passage starts with Peter speaking of his impending death...
12 Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have.
12 - These qualities:
5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge,
6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness,
7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.
FAITH expressing itself in Christ-like LOVE will produce virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness and brotherly affection
Peter says he wants to remind them of these qualities, even though they KNOW them for a few reasons
FIRST…to STIR them up
13 I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder,
23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.
24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,
25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
SECOND…because he won’t have much longer to do so...
14 since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.
FINALLY…so that you will remember them at any time.
15 And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.
Peter’s concern is that those claiming the name of Christian are in fact following Jesus. As we’ll get into over the coming weeks, there are false teachers and false prophets among them and Peter wants them to be able to examine their hearts before the Lord.
I think his point thus far has been that, when Jesus has changed your heart, your heart has been changed to be like His.
He is thus challenging them that a changed heart bears fruit, these qualities we’ve discussed.
16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
Peter and the apostles were accused by those cutting into the church that the testimony about Jesus was just myth
The basis is likely the circumstances in which the church existed
persecution of the church
peace and prosperity in the Roman empire
They may have been looked at in a similar light to which we look at that guy on the street corner saying Jesus is coming...
Peter’s response to these challenges is that he was an eyewitness of these things.

Jesus is coming back
1 “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.
2 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.
3 For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them,
4 but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps.
5 As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept.
6 But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’
7 Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps.
8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’
9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’
10 And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut.
11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’
12 But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’
13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.
Don’t trust or despair in waves and wind
2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds,
3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.
4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.
7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;
8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
Let the Lord fulfill the prophecy
24 “Then from his presence the hand was sent, and this writing was inscribed.
25 And this is the writing that was inscribed: Mene, Mene, Tekel, and Parsin.
26 This is the interpretation of the matter: Mene, God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end;
27 Tekel, you have been weighed in the balances and found wanting;
28 Peres, your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”
