By the end of this message we should know the Bible subject and purpose.
CHRIST is the subject of the Bible. Any other way of perceiving and consuming the scriptures you will find yourself at a disappointment.
If the end goal isn’t knowing God through the person of Jesus Christ your views of the Bible will be critical and lacking and eventually you will move on to another piece of literature.
The Lord Jesus is the supreme subject of the Bible.
His perfection from His person and work are revealed in many ways
1. Jesus is the Creator of all things
In the NT we see that all things where created by Christ
Notice the pattern of “all things.” The Bible is very explicit about Jesus being the creator of all things.
John 1:3 - All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
1 Cor. 8:6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.
Col. 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.
Col 1:17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
Hebrews 1:2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;
God the Father and The Holy Spirit had a role to play in heaven but Jesus Christ had a main role to play in creation.
The perfections of the universe reflect His handiwork.
Because He is Creator, He has the place of being the supreme ruler of the universe.
2. Jesus Christ is the supreme ruler of the world.
God’s sovereignty refers to his absolute and unrivaled rule over all his creatures and their circumstances.
To affirm that God is sovereign is to affirm that God reigns, universally and invincibly. God’s sovereignty implies his absolute ownership
( Gen. 14:22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the LORD, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth,
- The Possessor means He owns heaven and earth.
Deut 10:14  Indeed heaven and the highest heavens belong to the LORD your God, also the earth with all that is in it.
Job 41:11 NKJV
11 Who has preceded Me, that I should pay him? Everything under heaven is Mine.
Psalm 24:1 NKJV
1 The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein.
authority (Ps 47:2, 7) ,
Psalm 47:2 NKJV
2 For the Lord Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth.
Psalm 47:7 NKJV
7 For God is the King of all the earth; Sing praises with understanding.
and control (Job 38–39; Jer 5:22; Eph 1:11) over all things.
Jeremiah 5:22 NKJV
22 Do you not fear Me?’ says the Lord. ‘Will you not tremble at My presence, Who have placed the sand as the bound of the sea, By a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass beyond it? And though its waves toss to and fro, Yet they cannot prevail; Though they roar, yet they cannot pass over it.
Ephesians 1:11 NKJV
11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will,
It is the purpose of God that every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord.
Isaiah Prophesy about the Person Jesus Christ.
Isaiah 45:23 I have sworn by my own name;I have spoken the truth, and I will never go back on my word: Every knee will bend to me, and every tongue will declare allegiance to me.”
Romans 14:10-12 10 But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. 11 For it is written:“As I live, says the Lord, Every knee shall bow to Me,And every tongue shall confess to God.” 12 So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.
Phil 2:9-11 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Though the Bible records the history of man and his rebellion Psalm 2:1-2 , it also reveals that Christ is awaiting the day when the full sovereignty of Christ will be revealed. Psalm 110:1 - The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand, Till I make your enemies your footstool.
Jesus sovereignty is also express in His relationship to the church.
He is called Head of The church. Eph 1:22-23 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
As the supreme sovereign over the Israel, over the church , and over the world. Christ is the supreme Judge of all of humanity .
John 5:27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.
Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.7 Of the increase of His government and peaceThere will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
Psalm 72:1-2 -1 Give the king Your judgments, O God, And Your righteousness to the king’s Son. 2 He will judge Your people with righteousness, And Your poor with justice.
3. Jesus Christ is revealed as the incarnate Word.
The physical embodiment of what God is, and a revelation of nature and being of God. In Christ are revealed all attributes that belong to God. , especially His wisdom, power, holiness, and love.
Jesus Christ is the Word the expression of what God is.
John1: 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Through Jesus Christ men can come to know God in a more accurate and detailed way than in any other means of divine revelation.
Hebrews 1:3 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
It is the central purpose of God that He reveal Himself to His creatures through Jesus Christ.
4. Jesus as Savior.
The work as Jesus as Savior is a prominent theme in scripture.
Since the fall of humanity Christ was always depicted as being the provision for man because of his sins.
Gen 3:15 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”
In the OT Christ is depicted as the servant of Yahweh who would bear the sins of the whole world
Isaiah 53:4–6 NKJV
4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
As a sacrifice for sin, He was to die on the cross and suffer the judgement of the sin of the whole world.
1 Cor. 15:3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,
2 Cor. 5:19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
1 Peter 1:18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.
1 John 2:2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.
Rev. 1:5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood
As a savior is not on the sacrifice for sin but also the High Priest.
Hebrews 7:25–27 NKJV
25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. 26 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.
One of the central purposes of God, as revealed in Scripture, is to provide salvation through Jesus Christ for a lost race. Accordingly , from Genesis to Revelation, Jesus Christ for a lost race.Jesus Christ is presented supremely as the only Savior.
Acts 4:12 NKJV
12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
The purpose of the Bible.
According to the written Word of God one supreme purpose is to Glorify God.
For this one purpose angel where created, the material universe was designed all to reflect the glory of God.
And man was created in the image and likeness of God to reflect His glory .
Even sin was permitted and redemption was provide all for the glory of God. I know this is inscrutable ( difficult, and impossible to understand but yes its all for His glory)
What are somethings that are for the glory of God.
Angels and men, the material universe and every creature , are created for His glory.
Col 1:16 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.
Psalm 19:1 NKJV
1 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.
2.The nation of Israel is for the glory of God .
Isaiah 43:7 NKJV
7 Everyone who is called by My name, Whom I have created for My glory; I have formed him, yes, I have made him.”
Isaiah 43:21 NKJV
21 This people I have formed for Myself; They shall declare My praise.
Isaiah 43:25 NKJV
25 “I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins.
Isaiah 60:1 NKJV
1 Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.
3. Salvation is unto the glory of God
Romans 9:23 NKJV
23 and that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory,
Its a manifestation of Gods grace
Ephesians 2:7 NKJV
7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
4. All service should be unto the glory of God (Matt. 5:16;
John 15:8; 1 Cor. 10:31; 1 Pet. 2:12; 4:11, 14). The Bible itself is God's instrument by which He prepares the man of God unto every good work (2 Tim. 3:16-17).
The Christian's new passion is that God may be glorified (Rom. 5:2). Even the believer's death is said to be to this one end (John 21:19; Pnil. 1:20). The saved one is appointed to share in the glory of Christ (John 17:22; Col. 3:4).
