This week we spent a lot of time in persistent prayer: for Jonah’s hearing, for Tim, and Heather’s family.
Prayer that makes a request of God.
Matthew 7:7–11 (NIV)
7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
9 “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?
11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
Petitionary Prayer makes request of God
Php 4:6 “6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
1 Jn 5:14-15 “14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.”

Some people think God does not like to be troubled with our constant coming and asking. The only way to trouble God is not to come at all.

Today we are going to look at a woman who was petitioning Jesus about healing her daughter of demon possession.
Matthew 15:21-28 “21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.” 23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” 24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” 25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said. 26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” 27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” 28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.”

God’s Provision
Rev. and Mrs. G. Christian Weiss lived entirely by faith when they were engaged in home missionary work in northern Minnesota. One winter, when the snows were unusually thick and their supplies unusually thin, Mrs. Weiss set a bowl of boiled potatoes on the table.“This is it!” she said. It was their last provisions.Without complaining, they bowed their heads and her husband gave thanks, asking God to supply their future needs. Suddenly they heard a sharp knock. At the door was the wife of the manager of the nearby ranger station. After stammering a moment in seeming embarrassment, she said, “We were expecting a crew of workers today, but they phoned to say they weren’t able to get through. I had a big dinner prepared for them, and my husband and I will never be able to eat all that food before it spoils. Could you come over and have dinner with us?”The Weisses quickly consented, and shortly they sat down for a second time that night, but now they said grace over a feast of roast duck, vegetables, pie, and all the trimmings.
