INTRO
Ministry is hard and there is lots to do
How can we expect 1 man to do it all?
We can’t and it is not supposed to be a one man job
PRAYER
A - Ps 99.1 = LORD God as we gather today we recognize that you reign supreme. Therefore let us be reminded today not to be proud before you. You sit enthroned upon the cherubim above the heavens and so our hearts melt before you.
C - Father we confess that we often think more highly of ourselves then we ought to. We think we don’t need help from others, we can manage on our own we say. However you have designed us for fellowship, for community, for a one-another experience as members of your body and your church.
T - Therefore Father we thank you for your goodness and faithfulness in designing the church body to have overseers as well as deacons to help lead, to guide, and to care for the body of believers.
S - As we look at the office of deacon this morning please help us to personally understand and apply the texts we examine as well as aspire as a church to appoint the right men for these positions. May you be honored and glorified by our obedience to you in all things.

Deacons Service

Acts 6:1–7 ESV
1 Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. 2 And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. 3 Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. 4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” 5 And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. 6 These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them. 7 And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
CLOSE
Matthew 20:25–28 (ESV)
25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your Deacon, 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
