Peter’s Story

His brother, Andrew, was first disciple that was called.
He was second.

Call of Peter

Matthew 4:17–22 ESV
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” 18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Luke 5:1–11 ESV
1 On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
Peter encountered Jesus for the first time. He didnt totally change that day, but he could not explain and could not turn away from what he found in Jesus.
I want to give you an opportunity to experience this man Jesus tonight. Maybe for the first time, maybe a hundred times.

Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 5:8 ESV
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 10:9 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

The last night

Matthew 26:31–40 ESV
31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.” 33 Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” 34 Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” 35 Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same. 36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour?
Peter just couldnt stay consistent. He was all sold out for Jesus one moment, but failing in the next moment.
Jesus even predicted he would.
That doesnt make it ok, but it shows Jesus had grace for Peter long before Peter actually failed.
We see the true depth of Peter’s faith. He says he will go anywhere with Jesus, even death, but he cant even consistantly pray with Jesus.
WOW. Sound like anyone?
Maybe you have failed over and again.
You dont need to be resaved. You need to repent.
Not only do we see Peter NOT DO the things Jesus called him to do, but we see him DO things that Jesus hasnt called him to do.
Even though they are in Jesus’ name.
John 18:10 ESV
10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
What are some things people do that are in Jesus’ name but they are not doing what Jesus told them to do.

An ending like the beginning

John 21:1–3 ESV
1 After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
Peter is tired of sitting around.
When you’re older and you lose a friend, these moments arent quite the same. When you are younger, you are with your friends a lot.
Ive lost a friend during that time when we were together a lot.
Maybe tell of the day of Zachs funeral and sitting around then Matthew saying, Im going swimming. Yall want to go?
Im sure not catching anything probably made them even more depressed.
John 21:4–6 ESV
4 Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” 6 He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish.
Im not sure why John is named as the first one to notice. We have to assume thats the way it happened. John is the only one that records these events.
Why in the world wouldn’t have Peter noticed him first?
THIS IS HOW HE WAS CALLED!
John 21:7–8 ESV
7 That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. 8 The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.
John was back in full work mode, and wasnt noticing a lot. I guess that’s why he didnt recognize Jesus. But he even had shirt and stuff off cause he’s doing serious fishing.
He gets dressed and jumps in the water. Not sure why it would be smart to put clothes back on then jump in and let them get full of water, but...
He’s so excited that he forgot to help them get all the fish in to land.
John 21:9–19 ESV
9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. 15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”
Jesus isnt playing games with Peter. He is restoring him. He’s reassuring him.
He tells him, Peter, yes you will follow me even til death.
Matthew 26:35 ESV
35 Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.
Jesus’ words are exactly the same in the end as they were in the beginning, “FOLLOW ME.”

What does it mean to follow Jesus?

Its a lifelong call.
This is the story of Peter.
Peter had to reminded along the way. Jesus had to tell him several times.
Peter is our hope for salvation and change
There will be times when you have to be called back in.
You dont have to lead or know, just follow.
You do not have to be naturally bold or a great leader, just follow Jesus.
Jesus isnt asking anything more of you than he did Peter. Its literally monkey see, monkey do.
But you do have to do.
Jesus said be baptized, so be baptized.
Jesus said stay in the scriptures, so read the bible
Jesus said pray, so pray
Jesus said kill the sin within you, so kill the sin.
You will have to die
Matthew 16:24–25 ESV
24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
Maybe not gruesome death for Jesus like Peter (hopefully you wont)
But there is a death to die
Take up cross and follow me
Lose your life will find it
If you’re a christian, youre already dead
clip from band of brothers
Romans 6:1–4 ESV
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
