Illusionists - turning something into another
Or pencil trick - wobbling
READ: John 2:1-12
Jesus - miraculously turning something into another
Here, water to wine
Later
Lame to healed
Blind, to seeing
Dead, to alive
Getting lost, missing the forest for the trees
Wedding nuance
Mary apparently involved in this wedding plan
Jesus and disciples are there - family matter?
Wedding celebrations lasted a week
“Woman” - not a chiding remark or address
Same word spoken to Mary from the cross
Oinos
Wine (cite Ancient Wine and the Bible)
“Jesus made wine, Jesus drank wine”
The word “RUN” - 32 or more meanings
First - 7-8 Hebrew/Greek words translated to the English “wine”
CONTEXT, CONTEXT
It is wrong to assume that just because the English word “wine” is there, that it means modern day wine, intoxicating
Weeding of Cana - Not to justify drinking alcohol
Today’s “wine” = 15% or more alcohol
Today’s wine ALWAYS means alcoholic
Bible times - NEVER means alcoholic, unless the context suggests otherwise (and IF there was fermented wine, it was diluted with water, and it would take nearly 25 glasses to have the effect of one glass today)
“Oinos” can mean alcoholic and non-alcoholic
Ancient practices - they could preserve pressed juice without fermenting it
Thousands of cups of drink made by Jesus here - the new wine, similar to freshly-pressed grapes
TAKE HOME POINTS
The Bible NEVER says Jesus turned this water into alcoholic beverage
The Bible NEVER says Jesus and disciples drank alcoholic wine
Would Jesus go to the store, today, and get a bottle of wine to drink? NO
Points of this passage are NOT
about alcohol, wine, etc
about Jesus blessing a wedding, making it sacred (God already did that in Genesis)
OK, so... main points of this passage

1) Jesus is not on OUR Time Schedule

The Jewish wedding - 7 days of celebration
Mary is apparently involved in some way, she is concerned about running out of the drink
Jesus recently called disciples, they were there at the wedding, maybe more people showed up than expected
Honor was important
Jesus’s mother
The married couple
She asks Jesus to intervene, perhaps knowing He can
“Woman” - not disrespectful (He says this from the cross, too)
“Why is this our concern?” But He sees it is indeed concerning to her, so....
He decided it was time to show His disciples, just a select few
It’s time to let them know who they are following...
Mary - perhaps wanted a more public miracle, for all the people to see who Jesus was
Jesus said it’s not time for that…yet
That time will come
One Lesson for them, and Us
God provides what is needed, when it’s needed
Philippians 4:19 NASB95
And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Psalm 145:15–16 NASB95
The eyes of all look to You, And You give them their food in due time. You open Your hand And satisfy the desire of every living thing.
Another Lesson....
God allows us to experience patience
This is a blessing from God
Experience feeling anxious, and then God provides - shocked?
Examples?

2) His Signs Point to Who He is

Not just the result of the signs
Issue - no wine; Sign - Jesus’ miracle
Problem solved, move on, right?
They SHOULD respond as the disciples did - believing in Him
People got fed - He is God (remember this when we get to John 6)
Water is transformed - He is powerful over nature (remember this when He calms the storm)
Ask people about Jesus’s first miracle
Oh, He turned water to wine
Yeah, but - HE SHOWED HIS GLORY AND POWER!
So, what should people do with evidence of Jesus’s glory

3) Jesus is all about Conversion

Be converted, walk with Him, faithfully!
The people at Cana
He can take care of them
The people at Cornerstone
He can take care of you
Jesus - miraculously turning something into another, water to wine
Jesus - miraculously turning something into another
Sinners to saints - the miracle of salvation
People today want signs, they read signs that are not there
Almost like they don’t trust what God has already said in His Word
Yes - God’s Word says that evidence of the end is always around us, and yes, things are said to get worse
But God’s Word is ALREADY settled...
nothing else needs to happen for Jesus to gather the church
The end times - we are ALWAYS in the end times - signs have been all around us since Jesus ascended in Acts 1
So realize that His glory is all around us
Stop following “signs” that just aren’t there
“Our Earth is degenerate in these later days; there are signs that the world is speedily coming to an end; bribery and corruption are common; children no longer obey their parents; every man wants to write a book and the end of the world is evidently approaching.”
2800 B.C. end times, 4800 years ago
TRUE-est sign - the church, God’s people
People today, need a sign
Some see “signs” in everything - dangerous
People are not in awe of Jesus, and they should be
But when there is a “sign” people get excited
Jesus’ life was about living for God’s purpose, including the Father’s timing
POINTS
Pray for what you need
God will provide what you need, when you need it
When He does, rejoice in His glory
Tell people about His glory
Be patient with God
He is patient with us, still desires more to be saved
His timing is perfect
Let Him convert you, transform you
Let Him use you to covert others
He has put you right where He wants you, so people can see you, and then see Jesus
