2 PETER 3:11-14

2 Peter 3:11–14 ESV

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.

1- OUR CHARACTER AS WE WAIT

It leads to hedonism: ‘I was nothing; I am nothing; so thou who art still alive, eat, drink, and be merry.’ It leads to apathy: ‘Once I had no existence; now I have none. I am not aware of it. It does not concern me.’ It leads, finally, to despair: ‘ “Charidas, what is below?” “Deep darkness.” “But what of the paths upward?” “All a lie” … “Then we are lost.” ’ Barclay concludes, rightly, that without the truth, embodied in the second coming doctrine, that life is going somewhere, there is nothing left to live for.

2- WAITING ON A PROMISE

2 Peter 3:13 ESV

13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

THE PROMISE THAT ISAIAH TELLS US ABOUT

22 “For as the new heavens and the new earth that I make shall remain before me, says the Lord, so shall your offspring and your name remain.

THE PROMISE THAT REVELATION CONFIRMS

Revelation 21:1 ESV

1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.

A PLACE WHERE NE EVIL EXIST.

Revelation 21:27 ESV

27 But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

3- PURSUE HOLINESS WHILE WE WAIT

2 Peter 3:14 ESV

14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.
