Concern with self?

Easy question isn’t it?
If we are totally honest, It is not an easy answer, most people, even Christians think of themselves first.
Paul tells the others to take the mind of Christ, not to think of themselves at all, but to think of others first.
Can you think where Paul tells others to think of others without selfish conceit? (maybe Php2:3-4)?
Philippians 2:3–4 NASB95
3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.
Does that passage tell you not to think of yourself at all?
Our passage today is a great passage about our Christian life not just in treating each other, but in treating others in general. For it brings glory to God.
It is a longer passage, we will read it all. Overview it then break it down.

Our passage

Open Bible, Bible app, see what sticks out, catches your eye and be ready to discuss it.
Romans 15:1 NASB95
1 Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength and not just please ourselves.
Romans 15:2–3 NASB95
2 Each of us is to please his neighbor for his good, to his edification. 3 For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.”
Romans 15:4 NASB95
4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
Romans 15:5 NASB95
5 Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus,
Romans 15:6 NASB95
6 so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 15:7 NASB95
7 Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God.
Romans 15:8 NASB95
8 For I say that Christ has become a servant to the circumcision on behalf of the truth of God to confirm the promises given to the fathers,
Romans 15:9 NASB95
9 and for the Gentiles to glorify God for His mercy; as it is written, “Therefore I will give praise to You among the Gentiles, And I will sing to Your name.”
Romans 15:10–11 NASB95
10 Again he says, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people.” 11 And again, “Praise the Lord all you Gentiles, And let all the peoples praise Him.”
Romans 15:12 NASB95
12 Again Isaiah says, “There shall come the root of Jesse, And He who arises to rule over the Gentiles, In Him shall the Gentiles hope.”
Romans 15:13 NASB95
13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
What sticks out to you in this passage overall?
Any verse in particular?
Why is each to please his neighbor (v.2)?
What is the example that Paul uses (v.3); can you think of another one Paul used with the Philippians (maybe consider Php2:5-11)
What was written in earlier times, and why was it written (v.4)?
Who does the granting according to (v.5)? Granting what?
What is the result of the granting that happen (v.6)?
What are the instructions given then in (v.7)?
In (vv.8-12) Paul shows that all of this is the fulfillment of the Prophesy’s of the things written before.
What is Paul’s hop, desire that God may do (v.13)?
If we made it past this today we are doing great, fantastic, let’s press on now.

Filled with care for others

It’s OK to love yourself, but you must love others and think of others more than self. Love others. Think of what Jesus said in (Mt22:39)
Matthew 22:39 NASB95
39 “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
What do you think if means to have concern for others or to bear the weaknesses of others?
Remember back, so long ago back in chapter-14 we talked about Christian liberty and and principles of conscience.
Use your Christian liberty to serve your brother, to love your brother to please your brother not just please and look out for yourself.
The tenor of the world is look out for #1, self, regardless of how if may impact others.
This is anti-culture and pushes against people who live a life that sacrifices for others like Christians do. They think we are weak; where in reality we are strong

Filled with Jesus example

I think we can agree that Jesus life was a lesson, that His life was a teaching, that His life was a living example.
May we again look at (Rom15:3-4)
Romans 15:3 NLT
3 For even Christ didn’t live to please himself. As the Scriptures say, “The insults of those who insult you, O God, have fallen on me.”
Romans 15:4 NLT
4 Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.
Jesus is the example of not living for Himself. Another great example previously mentioned is (Php2:5-11).
Maybe we should turn there and briefly look at that example. I won’t put on the screen so turn in your bibles there.
Php2:5-11 “5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
He put others first
He took abuse and suffered wrong for God’s glory
He fulfilled what was written before in the scripture (the O.T.)
Something to consider, something we may truly need to remember: God vindicates us through Christ Jesus instead of us trying to vindicate ourselves. How often do we try to justify or vindicate ourselves?
We go through many hard times in Following Christ (1Pt5:10; Jn16:33; Mt10:28)
In honesty doing what is right, knowing we are doing what is right may seem hard, it may seem difficult, but know the reproaches of the world fell on Christ. He already took them on for us. Ours are just temporary. Look what Peter said.
1 Peter 5:10 NKJV
10 But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.
That is because what Jesus told the apostles
John 16:33 NKJV
33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
Don’t take the reproaches we go through lightly; the ones the world casts on us for Jesus sake. For there is nothing they can do against the child for God. They may kill the body but cannot kill the soul!
Matthew 10:28 NASB95
28 “Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
