Eager to Listen

Why the people were eager to listen to Jesus?
Based on his teachings and miracles in Capernaum (4:31-44)
Jesus taught in the synagogue
Jesus healed many
Jesus healed a man with an unclean spirit
Jesus taught, healed, but there was something else He had,
“they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority” (4:32)
The Word of God once heard and accepted it creates a bond between you and Jesus.
1587Samuel was asleep, yet he heard God’s voice. But I know some people who are awake, yet have not heard it.—54.110
Charles Spurgeon
What are we listening to? To whom are we listening to?
The Word of God produces growth
English Standard Version (Chapter 6:7)
And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith
Application:
Are we listening to God’s Word, or are we listening to what others have to say about us?
V.2 (Jesus keeps walking and he sees two boats, and he gets on one of them. The owner of the boats are cleaning the nets after trying to find fish with no luck.)
Sometimes To listen to the God’s Voice we need to move away from shore

Going Deep

“Put out into the deep”
(V.4)
This command is singular, it is a command directed to Peter only.
Rebuttals:
Why should I listen to a carpenter? I am the expert here
Leave behind what is comfortable
Going back to the unknown
What should I go back, I just came from deep
Danger I may encounter a storm
I am ok not catching any fish, I can let it go, I can try tomorrow
“And let down your nets for a catch”
This command is in plural, so it was made to all who were in the boat.
What do you mean for a catch???
God loves when we argue with Him
V.5 Rebuttal Continue:
I am tired. We have worked all night,
Why are you asking the impossible?
I am a fisherman, you are a carpenter
(The story of the golden calf (Exodus 32)
Do you argue with God? If you argue for something or with someone is because you care
The immediate obedience
Despite the fact the Peter knew that it is unlikely to get a good catch (Fishman knew about it)
Peter decided to obey Jesus despite all odds
Obedience besides the criticism of his crew and those in the other boat
Peter knew Jesus prior to this encounter: In his mother in law house (Luke 4:38-41)

Jesus Heals Many

38 And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39 And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.

40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.

In spite of his previous experience, I will obey you, “I will let down the nets.”
V. 6-7 The result of Peter’s obedience: Abundance of fish

Worship

Before worship we need to have conviction of sin
He pushes Jesus away
(how many of us have done the same?) We commit sin, and we do not want to come before Jesus, we draw Him away
Falls at the knees of Jesus
From Master (one who watches over the herd) to Lord ( The Holy One)
Luke 4:34 “34 “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.””

What does it mean to follow Jesus

To follow Jesus means to leave everything behind, and to take everything with you
Peter could said, Jesus, I will follow you but:
Let me finish here with this great catch
I can’t follow you now, I got to deal with my temper first, then I will follow you
Jesus welcomes Peter and gives him a new purpose. The same way Jesus caught Peter by grace, now he gives Peter the purpose to call others by grace.
Jesus welcomes you and I just as we are, but it expects we leave everything for Him
