Mark 1:29–34 (ESV)
29And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
30Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her.
31And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.
32That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons.
33And the whole city was gathered together at the door.
34And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
INTRODUCTION
Our text says that Jesus immediately left the synagogue which is described as a school where people where taught the religious law.
Its pretty similar to what today’s Church is.
Some people today define church as a place that you go to.
Others define Church as who we are.
Some say that the church comes to gather with one another.
Other’s say that the church scatters so we can reach more people.
So which one is right? I don’t think it’s a question of either/or but a question of both/and. The church gathers together for fellowship and worship but also scatters for evangelism to reach the lost.
But who we are on Sundays should be the same way we are Monday thru Saturday.
Who we are in Church should be the same way we are at home.
Who we are in public should be the same way we are in private.
In our scripture this morning it speaks of how Jesus left the synagogue where worship took place as He taught with power and authority and then leaves and enters Simon Peter’s house in capernaum with four of his closest disciples.
That brings me to my first point of how...

The Worship of God brought the Presence of Jesus to a home.

We don’t have to wait until Sunday morning to experience the presence of God.
you can worship in the shower.
You can worship in your backyard mowing the lawn.
You can worship washing dishes.
You can worship when you’re driving to work.
English Standard Version -John 4:23-24
But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
We can worship God anywhere for he is spirit and truth but there’s something tangible in that we can sense and feel when God’s presence is with us in a room. There are some things that can keep Gods presence away too.
Such as sin and especially legalism which restricts our freedom in Christ. I had a pastor tell me that in his first church the lease for the parsonage actually had written down “No sun bathing on Sundays”.
Now come on,no Sun Bathing on Sundays, whatever that means. But there was this legalism present in the church that restricted the freedom in Christ.
We can get so wrapped up in adding man made regulations to God’s law that it prevents the Holy Spirit from working in our lives.
To say that we must worship God “in spirit” means, among other things, that it must originate from within, from the heart; it must be sincere, motivated by our love for God and gratitude for all he is and has done.
Worship cannot be mechanical or just following a list of do’s and dont’s.
This is what the problem with the pharisee’s was. Time and time again they would make up rules upon rules telling Jesus well you can’t do this or do that. Especially on the Sabbath.

The Worship of God brought the Hope of God to a home.

Also we see the worship of God brought the hope of God to a home. Jesus shows up at the house and suddenly everyone’s spirit is lifted up. They knew who he was, what he’s done and what he’s capable of.
verse 30 says...Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her.
Now I don’t know if Simon was trying to get some brownie points now with his mother-in-law and his wife or what.
but it’s interesting that Mark records that they told Jesus. These three words give us confidence to come to Jesus with our needs and problems.
Often we look everywhere else before turning to God. We look for experts and professionals first.
We often go to google instead of God. Some go to Oprah or Dr. Phil instead of God.
We can go to God with our troubles and burdens. He cares for us like no one else. He is our hope. Maybe in your home you have a situation that feels hopeless.
Maybe your marriage is fallen apart. I had someone say to me a while ago, “You know Pastor Scott, my wife cheated on me and no matter how much counseling I go to and how hard I try, I just cant let it go.
The date is coming up where it will Mark 5 years since she cheated on me.” My advice was, don’t celebrate anniversaries of when your spouse cheats on you.
Bad idea! Love keeps no record of wrongs.
God is our hope in hopeless situations.
Maybe you are struggling with some sort of addiction. You have tried every type of rehab yet you still find yourself returning to that vice, that next fix, that next dose.
And no matter what you do, you cant overcome that addiction in your life. God can set you free. He can take that desire, that itch, that craving away if you let him.
God is our hope in hopeless situations.
Maybe you are struggling mentally. You just can’t seem to stop thinking those thoughts of suicide, anxiety or depression. It’s just an endless cycle and rollar coaster that you feel like you will never get off.
God can give you purpose and meaning. He can calm your anxieties, worries, and fears. His voice of truth can conquer the lies of the enemy if you let him.
God is our hope in hopeless situations

The Worship of God brought the Touch of God to a home.

His touch has the power to cleanse us from sin
His touch has the power to give sight to the blind
His touch has the power to make the death, hear
His touch has the power to make the mute, speak
His touch has the power to make the lame walk
We see in verse 31 that it says...”And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her”
This wasn’t the regular fever where you take a couple tyanol or ibuprofen. No this was a fever that could become fatal.
The Talmud mentions an enchantment or magical formula that was announced during those times that was suppose to be a cure for it but, then Jesus comes and throws all that away. He lifts her up and the fever goes out.
God still heals today! He isn’t the GREAT I WAS He is the GREAT I AM!

The Worship of God brought the Service to God to a home.

The Mother in law who is not fever-less. Who is completely healed begins to immediately serve them. There wasn’t any time in the recovery but she immediately started to serve them.
This woman had an attitude of gratitude and as a response to what God has done for her she began to serve. What a wonderful picture that is for us today.
I’ve seen to many people who God has saved from a tragic accident, heart attacks, lung issues, and the like then have them just toss God a side until there next need comes.
They go in this endless cycle and they fail to show God any thanks or praise for what He’s done.
Not this mother in law. She shows us what it means to be a true servant. She was a willing servant not one who was forced by obligation and ruled by an iron fist by her master.
She looked at what Jesus had done for her. Jesus infused his healing power in her when she was laying on her death bed and in response she served all that were there. Not because she had to but because she wanted to. Now that’s worship.
We don’t have to worship but we get too. It’s a privalage and an honor to worship the one who paid the price for our sin.

CONCLUSION

32That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons.
33And the whole city was gathered together at the door.
34And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
Jesus has an open door policy. He is available

APPLICATION

Now the question we should ask ourselves is how are we doing at worshiping God at home?
Do other sense God’s presence when they are around us?
Do we bring hope to the hopeless?
Do we bring healing and restoration to those who are hurting?
Does the way we worship God at home inspire others to serve him?
