Last time...

we went over the background to the Letter today we are going to look at the first five verses
Galatians 1:1–5 ESV
1 Paul, an apostle—not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead— 2 and all the brothers who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

What I want to accomplish today

I want us to get a greater understanding of this letter, specifically the introduction.
I want us to learn a little bit of Bible Study technique.

Observations

How to

nothing is to unimportant when making observations what happens is after a while you really see what God is saying

Making observations

Paul is the writer (v1)
Paul is an Apostle (v1)
Paul’s Apostleship is not given to him by men but by God Through Jesus Christ (v1)
Paul makes the above a point to spell out who he is uses the word “Through” dia in the greek. Jesus is the means by which he is an apostle. He’s setting up something here. We know from our background study he is countering false teachers so he is making that point right out the gate.
Jesus is able to give apostleship (v1
Jesus is the Christ Title applied to Jesus (v1)
God is called Father (v1)
Jesus was risen from the dead (v1)
God the Father rose Jesus from the dead (v1)
Raised is in the past tense (v1)
Him refers to Jesus (v1)

King words/Persons

Paul - originally Saul of Tarsus, former persecutor of the church, was called by Jesus to be the apostle to the gentiles. He was trained by Gamaliel so he was no slouch in education. Was a Roman Citizen, a missionary he wrote several letters.
Acts 22:1–7 ESV
1 “Brothers and fathers, hear the defense that I now make before you.” 2 And when they heard that he was addressing them in the Hebrew language, they became even more quiet. And he said: 3 “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated at the feet of Gamaliel according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God as all of you are this day. 4 I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering to prison both men and women, 5 as the high priest and the whole council of elders can bear me witness. From them I received letters to the brothers, and I journeyed toward Damascus to take those also who were there and bring them in bonds to Jerusalem to be punished. 6 “As I was on my way and drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from heaven suddenly shone around me. 7 And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’
(look at it further)
He was the one who brought the gospel to the Galatians the first
Apostle
Major points - He gives the gospel right off the bat that Jesus was raised from the dead by the father
He mentions his apostleship because it shows his calling which is different then that of a pastor/elder while he was that aswell

His object in doing so, as we have remarked on former occasions, was to employ the authority of his station, for the purpose of enforcing his doctrine. This authority depends not on the judgment or opinion of men, but exclusively on the calling of God; and therefore he demands a hearing on the ground of his being “an Apostle.” Let us always bear this in mind, that in the church we ought to listen to God alone, and to Jesus Christ, whom he has appointed to be our teacher. Whoever assumes a right to instruct us, must speak in the name of God or of Christ.

Calvin
So while and elder is recognized by men set aside and the laying on of hands and ordination and those men after testing and seeking the Holy Spirit confirm the Call of God and Apostle is set aside directly by Jesus Acts 13:2-3
Acts 13:2–3 ESV
2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
Men or by man
1 Corinthians 3:4–9 ESV
4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not being merely human? 5 What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. 9 For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.
The false teachers claimed authority by the people they may have knew, this still happens today, but the authority of Paul comes from God.
Paul’s teaching also doesn’t come from the power of been but through God.
big point: Paul ministry doesn come from mankind or man but is contrasted with Jesus Christ and God the father, whose does give him his ministry. And it’s a true ministry life.
Verse 2
Paul is not alone in his writing of this letter (v2)
Fellow Christians are spoken of with family language (v2)
