God’s name is I AM, not I’M NOT

Bored in Worship
We think of our faith in terms of what we can’t do
God’s very name is permissive “I AM”
John 10:10 (NASB95)
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
Galatians 5:1 (NASB95)
It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
As a child, Christianity became a list of do and do not’s
God is the great I AM
What is your I’m Not
I’m Not enough
I’m don’t have enough money, people, friends, stuff
God is not the God of I’m Not, He is the God of I AM
Even though, as Christians, as son’s and daughters of the most high God, there are many things what we cannot and should not do: Our life is not defined by I’m Not it is defined by I AM.
Ephesians 1:1 (NASB95)
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,
To the saints who are at Ephesus and who are faithful in Christ Jesus:
like an introduction to a research paper. It outlines the entire book.
the people of Ephesus,
history of Ephesus, 300,00 people
coastal town
modern day Turkey, a part of Asia Minor
worship of the Goddess Diana
goddess of the underworld
power, magic, and astrology
if you lived in Ephesus back then, you would have worn your lucky charms and said incantations because the priests in the temple of Diana could curse you and you could die or get sick.
Ephesus was Hell on Earth
Compulsory prostitution
daily sacrifice of babies to the Goddess
Paul knew all of this when he wrote “the faithful in Christ Jesus”
He is writing to tell us that we have two homes
the first home is the one we were born into
as Christians we have a new home in Christ Jesus
Dichotomy like marriage- The two shall become one flesh
of Ephesus and in Christ
We are in the world but not of the world
Ephesians 1:18–23 (NASB95)
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,
and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might
which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,
far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church,
which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
Paul is telling them that even Diana is subject to God
Ephesians 2:1–10 (NASB95)
And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,
in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.
Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;
not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
By being seated with Jesus, we too have authority in Jesus Christ
The book of Ephesians repeats the phrase “In God” or “In Christ Jesus” 36 times
repeat that with me: In God, In God,
we learn through repetition
En Theos
where we get our English word “Enthusiasm”
Enthusiasm- To rave, to go into raptures, to go overboard
Reverence- Reverence means giving God what He’s worth
sometimes that means lighting a candle
there are other times when it is time for the church to get it’s praise on

Praise is the precursor to Breakthrough

Let’s give God an Enthusiastic praise
Biblical examples of praise/breakthrough
walls of jericho
victory of Jehosophat
Daniel and the lion’s den
Rad, shack and benny
the prison with paul and silas
and the place where they were was shaken
greatest breakthrough of all time was accompanied by a host of angels giving praise to God
glory to god in the highest, and peace on earth to men
video- steve Balmer Going Crazy on Stage
this guy is crazy about computers
here
enthusiastic
-stupid things about computers live viruses, paswords etc-
we have the most high God
the king of kings
lord of lords
majesty of heaven
supernatural I AM
The one who sits above all things
the one who heals the sick
the one who raises the dead
no other name compares
Sometimes I’m embarrassed by my response to God
I allow pride lie to me and tell me I don’t need to praise god
I tell myself that getting excited is for kids
I allow what others think hold more weight in my mind than what GOD thinks
I am not alone in my feelings

3 things about enthusiasm

Enthusiasm isn’t a feeling it’s a discipline

Anyone can feel enthusiastic when they feel like it
sometimes we need to act like the psalmist- grab ourselves by the scruff of the neck and give god the praise anyway
yeah, today is an awful day, BUT, YET...
John Wesley Father of the Methodist Denomination
Traveling preacher
John Wesley wrote 230 books while riding a horse
that’s going to hurt
preached 50,000 sermons
trained 11,000 preachers
a third of great Britain got saved under his ministry
Preaching Diary- one month
Sunday Morning, May 5. Preached in St. Ann’s. Was asked not to come back anymore.
Sunday p.m., May 5. Preached at St. John’s. Deacons said “Get out and stay out.”
Sunday a.m., May 12. Preached at St. Jude’s. Can’t go back there either.
Sunday p.m., May 12. Preached at St. George’s. Kicked out again.
Sunday a.m., May 19. Preached at St. somebody else’s. Deacons called special meeting and said I couldn’t return.
Sunday p.m., May 19. Preached on the street. Kicked off the street.
Sunday a.m., May 26. Preached in meadow, chased out of meadow as bull was turned loose during the service.
Sunday a.m., June 2. Preached out at the edge of town, kicked off the highway.
Sunday p.m., June 2, afternoon service. Preached in a pasture, 10,000 people came to hear me.
If He had done this based on feeling, then he probably would not have turned up that day
The thing about enthusiasm is that it is NOT a personality trait
Habakkuk 3:17–18 (NASB95)
Though the fig tree should not blossom
And there be no fruit on the vines,
Though the yield of the olive should fail
And the fields produce no food,
Though the flock should be cut off from the fold
And there be no cattle in the stalls,
YET I will exult in the Lord,
I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.
because it’s not a feeling. Anyone can give God an exuberant praise when they feel like it
The bible doesn’t say we give a praise when we feel like it, it says that we bring a sacrifice of praise

We bring a sacrifice of Praise

we don’t just praise when we feel like it
a sacrifice is when you give something away that you don’t want to give away
when you want to give something away you go to facebook, or salvation army, or craigslist
Let’s make a decision to give god a praise today. Let’s give him a shout
everything is under his feet
he is seated far above all things
He’s great
He’s mighty
He’s all powerful
He’s brilliant
He’s amazing
-worship team come up-

Enthusiasm catches up with your face and your body

Psalm 23 (NASB95)
A Psalm of David.
The Lord is my shepherd,
I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside quiet waters.
He restores my soul;
He guides me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You have anointed my head with oil;
My cup overflows.
Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
In acts heal the man at the gate beautiful
Acts 3:6–9 (NASB95)
But Peter said, “I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—walk!”
And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened.
With a leap he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, jumping and leaping and praising God.
And all the people saw him walking and praising God;
His response was right and proper response to a lame man being healed
you weren’t lame, you were dead
and God in his sovereignty, reached down and breathed life into you
God’s not done yet

Enthusiasm makes you do anything!

and you don’t care
2 Samuel 6:3 NASB95
They placed the ark of God on a new cart that they might bring it from the house of Abinadab which was on the hill; and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were leading the new cart.
2 Samuel 6:5 NASB95
Meanwhile, David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord with all kinds of instruments made of fir wood, and with lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets and cymbals.
someone accidentally touched the ark and was struck dead, and David stopped the procession and had the Ark be stored at the house of a guy named Obed-edom for three months
2 Samuel 6:12–23 (NASB95)
Now it was told King David, saying, “The Lord has blessed the house of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, on account of the ark of God.” David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the city of David with gladness.
And so it was, that when the bearers of the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling.
And David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, and David was wearing a linen ephod.
So David and all the house of Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouting and the sound of the trumpet.
Then it happened as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart.
So they brought in the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent which David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.
When David had finished offering the burnt offering and the peace offering, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts.
Further, he distributed to all the people, to all the multitude of Israel, both to men and women, a cake of bread and one of dates and one of raisins to each one. Then all the people departed each to his house.
But when David returned to bless his household, Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, “How the king of Israel distinguished himself today! He uncovered himself today in the eyes of his servants’ maids as one of the foolish ones shamelessly uncovers himself!”
So David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel; therefore I will celebrate before the Lord.
I will be more lightly esteemed than this and will be humble in my own eyes, but with the maids of whom you have spoken, with them I will be distinguished.
Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.
Matt Redman - Unquenchable Praise
Undignified worship
Sometimes we allow what we consider tradition to dictate how we worship
we get stuck in a rut
we get stuck in our ways
we get stuck in our way of doing things
Tradition is not wearing your Grandfather’s hat, It’s buying a new one like he did” - Mark Twain
Our history is one of enthusiastic praise. Genuine passion for prayer, worship and a pursing of the gifts of the Holy Spirit
hymns, chant
Peter walking on water
why did peter walk on that water
Jesus, If that’s you, tell me to come to you
he was enthusiastic
to rave, to go into raptures, to go overboard
-WORSHIP-
Shofar uses in the Bible
an instrument of warning the nation of danger
as a signal in time of war to commence hostilities against an enemy and to conclude them
in the liturgy of Israelite and Judea temples and elsewhere to celebrate the roles of YHWH and the King in restoring order to creation by bringing peace and security to the nation
Banners
Tell people who you represent, bit like a signal pole always high on a hill.
Signal of intent about what is to come – Jeremiah 51.12
Indicate past victories they’d come through – different ribbons are attached to their pole under their banner depending on the battle won. Psalm 20.5 and 7
Indication of Gods presence – Moses and Aaron’s staff are banners that have been lifted and a response occurred. Exodus – 25
Put enemies to flight. Isaiah 31.9
Psalm 20:5 NASB95
We will sing for joy over your victory, And in the name of our God we will set up our banners. May the Lord fulfill all your petitions.
Isaiah 49:22 NASB95
Thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I will lift up My hand to the nations And set up My standard to the peoples; And they will bring your sons in their bosom, And your daughters will be carried on their shoulders.
