Have you inquired on a cruise to Alaska?
But depending on how much you wanted to go would determine if you paid the price or not.
A lot of the time we don,t count the cost before making a decision or making something permanent. { like a 2 story house}
Today’s message will cause you to check yourself and where you are in your discipleship process
And today we are going to look at scripture and count the cost of being a disciple of Jesus’
Being a disciple of Jesus isn’t cheap, we must count the cost of what that looks like, the cost is that we carry our cross everyday and follow him. Nothing comes before him.
So let’s see what Jesus says about the cost of being a disciple
Read Luke 14:25-35
Luke 14:25–35 (NIV)
25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said:
26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.
27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?
29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you,
30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’
31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.
33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.
34 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?
35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out. “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”

Cost of being a Disciple

a. It will be painful
-Jesus and God’s kingdom must come first in the life of a disciple
Jesus is using hyperbole—a figure of speech that relies on exaggeration to make a point.
He is not encouraging His followers to turn against their family members; rather, He is explaining that even devotion to family does not supersede the call to discipleship.
Jesus and God’s kingdom must come first in the life of a believer.
b. You have to count the cost
-to consider the great sacrifices involved in their decision
Jesus encourages His followers—as well as those in the crowd of pilgrims who had not yet become His disciples—to consider the great sacrifices involved in their decision. T
c. All or nothing is the price
-rid yourselves of anything that prevents a total commitment to God’s kingdom
Jesus sees an abundance of possessions as a hindrance to faith.
He instructs His followers to rid themselves of anything that prevents a total commitment to God’s kingdom
Jesus did not want a blind, naive commitment that expected only blessings.
As a builder estimates costs or a king evaluates military strength (v. 31), so people must consider what Jesus expects of his followers before they commit their lives to him.

Closing

Being a disciple of Jesus is cheap, we must count the cost of what that looks like, the cost is that we carry our cross everyday and follow him. Nothing comes before him.
put Jesus before everything else
pick up our cross and follow him daily
we have to sit down and count the cost of being a disciple
willing to give up everything
will be thrown out if not fit to have the qualities of salt
