First Baptist Church of Pharr, Texas was founded as a group of ten men and women gathered in August 1913 under the leadership of Rev. Herndon of Brownsville Baptist Church.

Home-based worship services began to gather regularly in the Linesetter home and were facilitated by Rev. A. J. Seale, who served three separate congregations including Donna and Santa Maria.
In December 1916 the church had grown and a more permanent location was necessary. After a new building was erected, it was destroyed by a tornado in May 1917. The building was repaired and the church continued to grow and a parsonage was built next to the church in 1919.

Over the next 20 years the church membership grew under the ministry of several pastors. Sunday School classes and other ministries were established and an educational building was added.
In the 40’s, the church was incorporated as a legal entity.

Mas tarde fue nombrada Mision de la Calle Villegas y despues se convirtio en Iglesia Bautista Jersalen, la cual ahora ocupa el edificio de la East Caffrey Street y es pastoreada por el Pastor Adan Rodriguez.
In 1957 a new Spanish mission church found its home in a small building erected. The mission was originally named Mision Bautista Bienvenida. It was later named Villegas Street Mission and later became Iglesia Bautista Jersalen, which now occupies the building on East Caffrey Street and is pastored by Pastor Adan Rodriguez.

In 1993 FBC Pharr broke ground and began building our current facility on Ridge Road. The Colosenses 3:1-4 NBLA

Children collected aluminum cans and youth and adults all worked at the job site. It was said that many had given “sacrificially to the building fund. It has been a time of spiritual growth and sweet fellowship as we have labored together.”
En 1993 FBC Pharr comenzó la construcción de nuestras instalaciones actuales en Ridge Road. El edificio del santuario fue terminado en 1994 con la ayuda de cada miembro activo de la iglesia. In 1995 our church was honoured as a historical site with a historical marker placed in front of our current sanctuary. That marker currently marks Pastor Joe’s parking spot, so don’t park there or he won’t know where to park his truck.
Since the initial construction of the sanctuary an education wing was added in 2005 as well as an annex building used for the youth.

En 2023 se demolió el edificio Anexo de la Juventud para dar paso a un gran edificio polivalente que actualmente se encuentra en fase de planificación urbanística y cuya construcción se espera que comience a finales de este año.
In 2023 the Youth Annex building was demolished to make way for a large multipurpose building that is currently in the city planning phase with construction expected to begin later this year.
The facility was named the Young Center for Family and Community Life, named for Elizabeth Young, a teacher and long-time member of FBC Pharr. It will house a multipurpose sports court, classrooms, and a full kitchen.
La instalación fue nombrado el Young Center para la Familia y la Vida Comunitaria, el nombre de Elizabeth Young, un maestro y miembro de largo plazo de FBC Pharr. Albergará una pista polideportiva, aulas y una cocina completa.

By staying true to these foundational commitments, FBC Pharr has certainly reached many thousands through the last 110 years and we are equipped and prepared to take advantage of any years that we have left before us as we continue to prepare for the return of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Paul turns from prayer in verses 3-8, that we studied last week, to encouragement in verses 9 and following.

Paul’s encouragement for the believers at Colossae was to tell them how he had been specifically praying for them int their spiritual development and growth.
Last week’s passage really was focused on the believers at Colossae, while this weeks passage focuses on pointing the believers to work towards becoming the very best that they can be.

This reminds me, that I had someone ask me about these references to the believers at Colossae being called “saints” by Paul throughout this letter.
This always deserves some form of comment in an area where so many have grown up with a strong Roman Catholic influence. The Roman Catholic usage of the term “saint” can be a bit confusing or misleading in our understanding and usage of the word.
Esto siempre merece algún tipo de comentario en una zona donde tantos han crecido con una fuerte influencia católica romana. El uso católico romano del término "santo" puede ser un poco confuso o engañoso en nuestra comprensión y uso de la palabra.

SAINT—one separated from the world and consecrated to God; one holy by profession and by covenant; a believer in Christ
The Roman Catholic church has traditionally elevated saints to almost deity, or perhaps some form of sub-deity. In attempting to celebrate those who exhibited some form of remarkable faith, they have made the term “saint” mean something very different than the common, run-of-the-mill Christian.
La Iglesia Católica Romana ha elevado tradicionalmente a los santos casi a la divinidad, o quizás a alguna forma de subdeidad. En su intento de celebrar a aquellos que mostraron algún tipo de fe notable, han hecho que el término "santo" signifique algo muy diferente de lo que significa para el cristiano común y corriente.
En la Biblia, el término "santo" se utiliza de forma muy diferente del uso católico romano. Si bien existe un significado base de que la palabra "santo" significa "consagrado a Dios, santo, sagrado, piadoso", podemos ver que los apóstoles utilizan la frase para referirse a los cristianos comunes en lugar de a los cristianos superestrellas que se apartan del mundo para mantenerse puros.
When we look at the Bible, the term “saint” is used very differently from the Roman Catholic usage. While there is a base meaning that the word “saint” means “consecrated to God, holy, sacred, pious” we can see the apostles use the phrase to refer to common Christians rather than superstars Christians who withdraw from the world in order to keep themselves pure.
So Paul’s usage of the word is basically saying that each one of us, who have chosen Christ and follow his ways, are to be considered saints, holy and sacred.

Paul addressed his letter to the church at Corinth like this...
2 To the church of God at Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called as saints, with all those in every place who call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord—both their Lord and ours.
He’s referring to saints as those who are called and sanctified in Christ.
Do you live your life in a holy and sacred way? / ¿Vives tu vida de una manera santa y sagrada?
Are you worthy of the term “saint”? / ¿Eres digno del término "santo"?
Se refiere a los santos como aquellos que son llamados y santificados en Cristo. Esto también me recuerda que nosotros

who are considered to be sanctified and saintly
are also called “a royal priesthood”
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Do you think of yourself as a priest?
As priests, this means that we have the ability to enter into God’s presence and seek his forgiveness for our own sins. This is why, many Christian faith traditions do not practice the confession with a priest as the Roman Catholics do.
Como sacerdotes, esto significa que tenemos la capacidad de entrar en la presencia de Dios y buscar su perdón por nuestros propios pecados. Por eso, muchas tradiciones de fe cristiana no practican la confesión con un sacerdote como los católicos romanos.

While the Bible does tell us to “confess our sins to one another” it does not require us to go to through an intermediary to bring our confessions to the attention of God.
For this reason I really love that we are getting a chance to study this really rich book that is jam-packed with good information for how we need to be living our Christian lives.

Don’t you see that scripture is not only a bunch of dusty old letters that were written to some really great and pious people a long time ago—people who are no longer alive but have moved onto exist at the foot of the throne of grace. But it is also written to you and to me. For we are saints too!
¿No te das cuenta de que las Escrituras no son sólo un montón de viejas cartas polvorientas que fueron escritas a algunas personas realmente grandes y piadosas hace mucho tiempo, personas que ya no están vivas, sino que han pasado a existir a los pies del trono de la gracia? The Bible was written for us! We are written into it. It applies to us when we apply it to our lives.

We gather together today to celebrate God’s grace and guidance in this church over the course of 110 years. As we move forward toward the future, lets not forget these foundational principles that we continue to value and cherish.

While Paul prayed ceaselessly for the saints in Colossae, we cannot cease to pray for our own continued growth, wisdom, and understanding of those who call FBC Pharr home.

Our church’s journey has always been rooted in seeking God’s will for how this church will serve the community around us. Let’s not grow weary in that search. Rather, let’s continue to pray for discernment in understanding God’s plan and beg him to give us the courage to follow him in faith.
El viaje de nuestra iglesia siempre ha estado arraigado en la búsqueda de la voluntad de Dios para que esta iglesia sirva a la comunidad que nos rodea. No nos cansemos en esa búsqueda. Let’s commit ourselves together to bearing fruit through every good work that we can discover in our daily lives.

The last think that I want for us to take away from today is that we had a great celebration of the past. Rather, it is my hope that we will reaffirm our commitment to make a positive impact in our community by proclaiming the knowledge of God and the gospel of Jesus Christ in everything that we do.
Lo último que quiero que nos llevemos de hoy es que hemos tenido una gran celebración del pasado. Más bien, espero que reafirmemos nuestro compromiso de tener un impacto positivo en nuestra comunidad proclamando el conocimiento de Dios y el Evangelio de Jesucristo en todo lo que hacemos.
As we celebrate our history, let us give joyful thanks to God, who has granted to us the holy inheritance in his kingdom. While we reflect on the founding of this great church, let’s also reflect on how God has rescued us from darkness and brought us into the light of Christ, which guides our actions, illuminates our path, and leads us toward his redemption and forgiveness.
Al celebrar nuestra historia, demos gozosas gracias a Dios, que nos ha concedido la santa herencia en su reino. Mientras reflexionamos sobre la fundación de esta gran iglesia, reflexionemos también sobre cómo Dios nos ha rescatado de las tinieblas y nos ha traído a la luz de Cristo, que guía nuestras acciones, ilumina nuestro camino y nos conduce hacia su redención y su perdón.
