Introduction

Galatians 2:20 KJV
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
There is a great hymn by Thomas Shepherd, written in the late 1600s. 501 in the book, same tune as Precious Lord, Take My Hand
1 Must Jesus bear the cross alone And all the world go free? No, there's a cross for ev'ry one, And there's a cross for me.
2 The consecrated cross I'll bear Till death shall set me free, And then go home my crown to wear, For there's a crown for me.
3 Upon the crystal pavement, down At Jesus' pierced feet, Joyful, I'll cast my golden crown And His dear name repeat.
4 O precious cross! O glorious crown! O resurrection day! Ye angels, from the stars come down And bear my soul away.
Luke 9:20–27 KJV
He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God. And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing; Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels. But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

Jesus Bore His Cross for Us

Luke 9:20–22 KJV
He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God. And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing; Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

We Must Bear Our Cross for Him

Luke 9:23 KJV
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
2 Timothy 3:12 KJV
Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
2 Timothy 3:12 CSB
In fact, all who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
Luke 9:24–25 KJV
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

Father, take my life, yea, my blood if Thou wilt, and consume it with Thine enveloping fire. I would not save it, for it is not mine to save. Have it, Lord, have it all. Pour out my life as an oblation for the world. Blood is only of value as it flows before Thine altar.

Luke 9:26–27 KJV
For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels. But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
