This Week’s Theme: Know the Truth
This Week’s Word is Truth in Scripture is more than mere veracity. In the OT it is a moral concept, grounded in the being of God himself, which embodies the ideas of faithfulness and reliability, while in the NT the concept widens to embrace the ideas of reality and completeness.
Memory Verse: John 8:32 “32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.””
Essence of the Text in a Sentence: The prophet Jeremiah experience opposition due to false prophets and he provided a message to expose their lies.
Sermon Proposition: You are called to assess and avoid the false messages given by those claiming to speak for the LORD.
Sermon Objective: I want those in attendance to learn how to recognize aberrant messages and steer clear of those individuals.
Sermon Text: Jeremiah 27:14-16
Introduction: [Read a fake news article. Then reveal how many shares and that it is fake news]
Transition: Fake News or Fake information is nothing new. During the time of the prophet Jeremiah, he had individuals who claimed to have insight into the future and claimed wisdom for directing others lives. There were even individuals who claimed the office of prophet but without the endorsement of the LORD. What can we do? How should we respond to the various messages flooding our ears.
Sermon Title: Fake News??
Jeremiah was commanded by the LORD to make wooden yokes and restraints. worn by Jeremiah and sent to the king of Edom, Moab, Ammonites, Tyre, and Sidon with a message of God’s empowering of Nebuchadnezzar to rule over them. Those who rebelled would by punished. Jeremiah 27:2-3 (NKJV) 2 “Thus says the LORD to me: ‘Make for yourselves bonds and yokes, and put them on your neck, 3 ‘and send them to the king of Edom, the king of Moab, the king of the Ammonites, the king of Tyre, and the king of Sidon, by the hand of the messengers who come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah.
Warn them Matthew 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if [it were] possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
THE LORD TOLD JEREMIAH
Jeremiah 5:31 NKJV
The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule by their own power; And My people love to have it so. But what will you do in the end?

WATCH THEIR WORDS

Jeremiah 28:8–9 NKJV
The prophets who have been before me and before you of old prophesied against many countries and great kingdoms—of war and disaster and pestilence. As for the prophet who prophesies of peace, when the word of the prophet comes to pass, the prophet will be known as one whom the Lord has truly sent.”

ARE FALSE

Jeremiah 27:9 NKJV
Therefore do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your dreamers, your soothsayers, or your sorcerers, who speak to you, saying, “You shall not serve the king of Babylon.”
Jeremiah 27:10 NKJV
For they prophesy a lie to you, to remove you far from your land; and I will drive you out, and you will perish.
Jeremiah 27:14–15 NKJV
Therefore do not listen to the words of the prophets who speak to you, saying, ‘You shall not serve the king of Babylon,’ for they prophesy a lie to you; for I have not sent them,” says the Lord, “yet they prophesy a lie in My name, that I may drive you out, and that you may perish, you and the prophets who prophesy to you.”
Jeremiah 14:14 NKJV
And the Lord said to me, “The prophets prophesy lies in My name. I have not sent them, commanded them, nor spoken to them; they prophesy to you a false vision, divination, a worthless thing, and the deceit of their heart.
Jeremiah 23:25 NKJV
“I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in My name, saying, ‘I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’
Jeremiah 23:32 NKJV
Behold, I am against those who prophesy false dreams,” says the Lord, “and tell them, and cause My people to err by their lies and by their recklessness. Yet I did not send them or command them; therefore they shall not profit this people at all,” says the Lord.

ARE FLESHLY

Jeremiah 14:13–14 NKJV
Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, the prophets say to them, ‘You shall not see the sword, nor shall you have famine, but I will give you assured peace in this place.’ ” And the Lord said to me, “The prophets prophesy lies in My name. I have not sent them, commanded them, nor spoken to them; they prophesy to you a false vision, divination, a worthless thing, and the deceit of their heart.
Jeremiah 23:16 NKJV
Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you. They make you worthless; They speak a vision of their own heart, Not from the mouth of the Lord.

ARE FOOLISH

Deuteronomy 13:1–5 NKJV
“If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, ‘Let us go after other gods’—which you have not known—‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the Lord your God is testing you to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice; you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him. But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has spoken in order to turn you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of bondage, to entice you from the way in which the Lord your God commanded you to walk. So you shall put away the evil from your midst.

WATCH THEIR WORKS

2 Corinthians 11:13–15 NKJV
13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.
Deuteronomy 18:10–12 NKJV
There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and because of these abominations the Lord your God drives them out from before you.

ARE FINANCIALLY MOTIVATED

Jeremiah 6:13–14 NKJV
“Because from the least of them even to the greatest of them, Everyone is given to covetousness; And from the prophet even to the priest, Everyone deals falsely. They have also healed the hurt of My people slightly, Saying, ‘Peace, peace!’ When there is no peace.
2 Peter 1–3 NKJV
Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
Titus 1:16 NKJV
They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.

WATCH THEIR WAYS

Jeremiah 23:10–11 NKJV
For the land is full of adulterers; For because of a curse the land mourns. The pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up. Their course of life is evil, And their might is not right. “For both prophet and priest are profane; Yes, in My house I have found their wickedness,” says the Lord.
Matthew 7:15 NKJV
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.
WHAT ARE YOU CALLED TO DO?

TEST THEM

1 John 4:1 NKJV
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
WHEN THEY COME SAYING, “I GOT A WORD”
YOU BETTER
CHECK THEIR WORDS
CHECK THEIR WORKS
CHECK THEIR WAYS

AVOID THEM

Romans 16:17–18 NKJV
Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple.
BECAUSE FOLLOWERS OF CHRIST

Revelation 3:20 (NKJV) 20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
