What we were:
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.
“So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;

What we had coming: Judgment for sinning against God.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
What I deserve for my sins is the death angel physically and spiritually.
Passover

What God makes available:
mercy - not getting what we deserve.
‘The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
Putting our faith in God’s plan of salvation no matter how strange it may sound.
Because of my sin I am doomed to die by God’s decree and because of His justice.
But God provides a sacrificial lamb to die on my place.
That lamb’s blood is applied to the doorposts and lentils of my heart.
The death angel sees the blood applied and because of Christ’s righteousness, passes over our life and spares us.
God’s punishment is given to all those who do not have the blood applied to their house.
The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
Jesus is our pure, perfect, spotless Lamb
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Believe in our heart:
Israel had to do the same thing.
They had to put their faith, their belief in the promise of God.
And their faith led them to action.
They did what God asked them to do as a demonstration of that faith.
Tight rope walker - Who will volunteer to get in the wheelbarrow?
Maui fires - tried to escape by swimming out into the ocean.
Many tried to cross on their own. Some got farther than others, but no one made it.
The question is: Will you get into Jesus’ wheelbarrow? Will you trust that He can get you safely to the other side? Will you commit your life into His hands?
If you haven’t given your life to Jesus Christ and have put yourself into His wheelbarrow, don’t delay do so today.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
As a result, we may die physically, but we will not die spiritually.

After putting our faith in the Passover Lamb’s sacrifice and covering, we are redeemed, set free from slavery.
And God leads us out of Egypt and on to a new journey to the Promised Land.
The next step was passing through the (sea)
waters of baptism
The Passover Lamb was a private act. A decision I made in my own home to apply the blood or not.
Walking through the Red Sea is a public event. We all go through it and witness it together.
Public Profession by faith
An act of faith witnessed by others around us.
A uniting of the covenant community heading in one direction away from Egypt and towards the Promised Land.
A symbol of one who follows - in that case Moses, in this case the one Moses pointed to - Jesus.
Jesus set the example for us
Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him. But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?” But Jesus answering said to him, “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he permitted Him.
Baptism is the opening move of an unfolding sequence after salvation designed to fulfill all righteousness.
It is also a foreshadowing of the baptism of death, which Jesus was to go through to secure righteousness for us through His sacrifice as our Passover Lamb.

It is also the demonstration of a desire to live a righteous life, which Jesus fulfilled perfectly, even though we do not.
Justification moves to sanctification which moves to glorification.
Paul makes an interesting connection in:
For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; and all ate the same spiritual food; and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.
We see an interesting connection between Communion (spiritual drink and food) and baptism (passing through the sea). These 2 events, with baptism dependent on salvation, but salvation not being dependent on baptism, brings about a beautiful synergy between the 2 ordinances we are called to keep. But I will touch on more of that next week.
It is the beginning of a journey through the wilderness, being lead by Christ, our Rock, and receiving spiritual nourishment from our bread of life, Jesus, and His life giving waters that satisfies our spiritual longing.
As we follow His path of righteousness through the desert, we will eventually reach the Promised Land and come to some green pastures and still waters. A state of rest and peace, where finally all is right between God and His world and His creation.
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Confess with our mouth
that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
Crossing the Red Sea was, in a sense, their beginning as a covenantal nation as they were delivered through the crossing of the Red Sea from slavery and became free to serve God according to His instructions.
