Selective Psalms, August 2023
Psalm 34:1-7.
ETS: David praised God because of what He did for him.
ESS: We ought to praise God because of all He has done for us.
OSS: [Devotional] {I want the people to determine to praise God because of His goodness, no matter what circumstances they may face.}
PQ: What is the sequential flow path of these verses?
UW: Pattern
Intro: [AGS]: Have you ever had a really bad day? Circumstances of the day just seemed to really leave you doom and gloom. My wife always tells me, on those days, that no matter how bad the circumstances are, I am the one in control of how they effect me and how much I let them impact my outlook on the day. [TS]: David was not in a good situation. He was fleeing from Saul who wanted to kill him because of jealousy towards him. He fled to the hometown (Gath) of Goliath, the giant he killed earlier. He did not realize it, but everyone there, including the king, wanted to kill him. So, in essence, while fleeing for his life from one place, he went to another place where his life was also sought. Yet, upon hearing this, David acted as a madman, and in doing so, he was released unharmed. David then wrote this Psalm, inviting people to praise God along with Him because of His goodness. David determined to proclaim the goodness of God. [RS]: No matter what circumstances we may encounter, we should determine beforehand to proclaim the goodness of God. He is worthy of our praise and adoration.
TS: Let us examine the path of these verses together now:
David determined to praise the LORD always. [vv. 1-2]
David invited others to praise the LORD with him. [v. 3]
David reflected on the LORD’s goodness in delivering him. [vv. 4, 6-7]
David assured others that those trusting in the LORD found satisfaction. [v. 5]
CONCLUSION:
[1] Have you made a determination to proclaim the LORD’s goodness even in the difficult seasons of life?
[2] Have you found the Lord to be faithful and good? What hinders you from praising Him?
[3] As you reflect and evaluate your life tonight, listen to and sing the words of the invitation tonight, determining to proclaim the LORD’s goodness.
