The Sermon

we have looked at the sermon that Jesus preached about the kingdom of Heaven
we have seen what people look like and what they do in this kingdom
how they are different because they are controlled by the Holy Spirit
loving our enemies
blessing those who mistreat you
don't have a judgmental attitude
a person who is in the kingdom is a person who does what Jesus says
If you love me keep my commandments
this person has built his house on the solid rock
now Luke is going to introduce us to this person
the Israelites are a festering painful boil on the rumps of Rome
to be assigned to Israel was not an well liked assignment
so we have here a centurion who is assigned to Capernaum
instead of hating the people he loves them
and funded and built them a synagogue
a place as a gentile is not welcomed
he also loves his servant who is considered property
a person that can be disposed of like trash if the owner wanted to
this kind of love is a supernatural kind of love taught by the Holy Spirit
remember the Holy Spirit is working here in the Old Testament way
where He comes into a person for a specific task
this is not the believers indwelling
lets read about this remarkable man
Read Luke 7 1-10.

Centurion’s Love

Love for the slave
V 1-2
Love for the people
Jewish elders who knows of Jesus ability to heal
Jewish elders that don’t care for Jesus
Jewish elders who will do anything for the Roman gentile
V 3-5
the Jewish leaders are praising this gentile saying he is worthy
he is worthy because V 5

Centurion’s Faith

Jesus was amazed at this gentiles faith
V 9
what did Jesus hear from this man that caused Jesus to be amazed?
V 6
Lord don’t trouble yourself
this was a gentiles house a jew cannot enter a gentiles house without becoming unclean
and this man knew that
I am not worthy
there is nothing in me that deserves anything good from Jesus
the centurion also knew about authority
V 8
this man knew of the power of the word
the power of authority
knew Jesus had power in His word
knew Jesus had the authority of God to to heal
what this man knew about Jesus resulted in faith
this faith resulted in trust that Jesus could do
Romans 10:17 LSB
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
faith has to be in something/ someone
many of our actions are dictated by faith
will you walk somewhere that you think is unsafe?
rickety stairs
will you feel safe getting in a car with a drunk?
we make decisions according to the abilities of others
“in the lab”
this centurion heard of Jesus and his abilities and then put his faith in Jesus to heal his servant
this also happens when someone is saved
they hear the bad news
they are a sinner in rebellion against God
as Peter preached to the people on Pentecost
Acts 2:21–24 LSB
AND IT WILL BE THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.’ “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God did through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of lawless men and put Him to death. “But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.
the same could be said about us our sin put him on that cross
we were not there but our sin was there
our sin was saying crucify Him crucify Him
put the God that I hate on that cross
kill Him Kill Him
but there is good news
the real reason that Jesus died was for to redeem His people
Jesus died for the forgiveness of sin
Jesus died to bring new life
Romans 6:23 LSB
For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
being a true follower of Jesus follows our complete trust in Him
Romans 10:9–10 LSB
that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, leading to righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, leading to salvation.
we take what we have learned about Jesus and put our faith in him
resulting in our trust in the savior to save us from the penalty of sin
resulting in repentance ( turning away, a hatred for our sin)
this Centurion gives us an example of what faith in Jesus results in
He is also giving us an example of what a true follower of Jesus looks like
does your faith look like his?
does your life look like his?
if it does not could possibly mean you are not saved
if you are trusting in something you did in the past
and your life does not look like a true follower of Jesus
then maybe you are not
