The Iron Did Swim

2 Kings 6:1-7

Elisha's miracles were much more mundane, on the whole, than those of Elijah. The incident recorded here is full of ordinary everyday interest. But the miracle is none the less spectacular on that account! And behind the miracle lurks a spiritual lesson. The lost ax head represents man's lost soul. The stick, cast into the Jordan, represents Christ, God's Branch, plunging into death and rising again, having secured the salvation of that soul. Looked at in this light, the whole incident blazes with the gospel.

1.  THE SOLEMN CONDITION OF THE AX HEAD

a.  Loss

b.  Liability

("Alas, master! for it was borrowed.")

c.  Limitation

(The work came to a stop.)

2.  THE SUDDEN CONVERSION OF THE AX HEAD

The prophet's "plan of salvation" was--

a.  Apparently very superficial

(What good would it do to throw a stick into the river?)

b.  Actually very sublime

(It prefigured Calvary--Christ's going into death for us.)

c.  Assuredly very successful

(It worked!)

3.  THE SILENT CONFESSION OF THE AX HEAD

a.  What a task it now had

b.  What a testimony it now had
