The Sermon On The Mount: The Beatitudes

Matthew 5:1-12

The Beatitudes set before us the victories of the Christ life. They demand a philosophy of life, a standard of behavior, a spiritual resource of divine power. They leave us awed and at times dismayed, for the Beatitudes demand absolute, undiluted perfection. The only person who ever lived the kind of life envisioned in the Beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount is the Lord Jesus Christ. He lived this life openly--before His family, His friends, His foes, His Father in heaven--day after day, every moment He drew breath on this planet. Thus He demonstrated that the principles embodied in the Beatitudes were not the empty idealism of a dreamer. They were tested in the red hot crucible of a life that ended at Calvary.

1.  SUBMISSION (Matthew 5:3)

2.  SORROW (Matthew 5:4)

3.  SALVATION (Matthew 5:5)

4.  SATISFACTION (Matthew 5:6)

5.  SYMPATHY (Matthew 5:7)

6.  SANCTIFICATION (Matthew 5:8)

7.  SOUL WINNING (Matthew 5:9)

8.  SUFFERING (Matthew 5:10-12)

NOTE: We are not asked to imitate Christ through our own power. We are told to invite Him into our lives so that He, by His indwelling Holy Spirit, might live His life in us. That's the genius of the Christian message. The Christ who gave His life for us also gives His life to us. Only He can live the Christian life.
