Do Not Cry

Read Luke 7 11-17
this woman is a widow she has already buried her husband
the funeral procession for her only son is outside the gates on their way to the burying place
The man probably died that very day
the grief is fresh,
the grief caused by the curse of Adam’s sin
God promised Adam the day he ate from the tree he would die
he died spiritually and eventually died physically
that curse has been passed to all of Adams descendants
She has the grief for the dead
the look and mannerisms of the son might have reminded her of her husband
as long as she lived she would have a living remembrance of the departed
but now he is heading to his grave and now-
grief for the fact that now the woman no longer has any one to take care of her
to supply food and clothing
to fix the roof when it is needed
to fetch water from the well
the funeral procession is coming out of the town
Jesus and His followers coming up the road into town
Jesus is on his way there because He He has a rendezvous with this woman
He has an appointment to keep
the Father has sent Him to bring this child back from the dead
so he says to the woman do not cry
saying this does nothing for the person unless you can do something about it
this is what we are looking at this morning
raising from the dead in 3 ways
physically
Spiritually
Eternally

Physically

V 14 Bier open top coffin
a stretcher to carry the body
Jesus tells the woman not to cry
the people are probably very upset at this statement
they are doing their best to mourn with this woman
and here comes a man saying don’t cry
Jesus then walks over to the stretcher and touches it
then talks to the boy tells him to get up
the dead is raised
the corpse is conversing
V 15
the authority of Jesus words has given new life to the cadaver
Jesus has the authority and power to raise the dead physically
Jesus also was resurrected from the dead
that grave he conquered
we celebrate every feast of first fruits

Spiritually

just kike this man who was raised from the dead to new life
because of Adam we are born dead
read Ephesians 2 1-5
we were dead in our trespasses and sins
we are laying on the funeral stretcher
our souls headed for hell
in order for us to be saved from this deadness
Jesus needs to stop the funeral procession and speak to us
the Holy Spirit needs to Quicken us
Ephesians 2:5 LSB
even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
we are being eaten by the worms dead
laying at the bottom of the ocean
a 3 course meal for the lobsters dead
we don’t even know we need a savior
someone to make us alive
our deadness in sin causes us to not want Christ
not to seek Him
John 3:3 LSB
Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
John 3:7 LSB
“Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
this must happen to you
it is not something that you do
before Jesus makes us alive - we are dead
dead people do not regenerate themselves
one has to be regenerated
Jesus through the Holy spirit has the power and authority to regenerate a dead heart
John 5:21 LSB
“For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.
before we are saved we are just as dead as this young man
and Jesus has to make us alive

Eternally

because Jesus has the authority to raise the dead physically and give spiritually dead a new birth
he will raise His people to a final Resurrection
1 Cor 15 20- 23.
we the ones who have been born again
we the ones who have a new life in Christ
V 50-53 our corruptible bodies are going to be made new
our immortal soul will receive a Immortal Glorified perfect body
V 55 -57
there is no longer a sting to death for a believer
there is no longer a fear of death for a child of God
there is no longer a dread of the other side for the bride of Christ
Jesus is the one who give victory over physical death
spiritual death
and eternal death
V 58 therefore
be stedfast in the work in which God has called you to do
in the resistance the devil
in staying near to our Lord
in the view of the resurrection your labors are not in vain
be immovable don’t let the worries and distractions of this world cause you to wander from the good work
don’t give up
