Installation
Before installing any major application, including Norton SystemWorks, you should
backup your entire system.
Individual products or features must be installed through the
Norton SystemWorks installation only.
If you have to install from a local drive, you must copy the entire contents of
the CD to the root of your hard drive. Otherwise, you may encounter
installation problems.
During installation, you may notice multiple portions of installation denoted by
"installing x of y" depending on installation options and version of
software being installed. Please let the installation of all parts complete
before going to next step for complete and proper installation.
During installation, you can specify the location of the custom directory where
the product could be installed.
During the installation of Norton SystemWorks Standard edition or Norton SystemWorks Premier
edition you can specify a custom directory location for Norton AntiVirus. To specify a
custom directory location, uncheck Norton AntiVirus on the Norton SystemWorks
Installation Options screen. Once Norton SystemWorks is completely installed and it
is activated, run NAVsetup.exe in the NAV directory on the Norton SystemWorks CD or
in the extracted setup files.
Order of installation for Symantec products
The following products integrate with one another and use shared components:
Norton AntiVirus
Norton Confidential
Norton Internet Security
Norton Personal Firewall
Norton SystemWorks
If you need to install two or more of these products from different product
release years, you should install them in chronological order. For example,
you should first install Norton SystemWorks 2006,and then install Norton Internet
Security 2007. If Norton Internet Security 2007 is already installed on your computer,
you should uninstall it, install Norton SystemWorks 2006, and then re-install Norton
Internet Security 2007.
Norton GoBack
Norton GoBack adds an underlying safety net to the use of your computer.
However, it is not a replacement for a recommended backup system, such as
Norton Ghost. In many situations, Norton GoBack will be able to restore your
entire computer or a specific file that would otherwise be lost. However, this
ability should not be assumed. Norton GoBack's restorative ability can depend on
the intensity of disk usage and the amount of disk space that is allocated for
tracking.
Installing Norton GoBack on a multi-boot disk/RAID systems.
Before installing any major application, including Norton GoBack, you should
backup your entire system.
You cannot install Norton GoBack on a multi-boot disk/RAID systems. Norton GoBack
option will be disabled in the Install options.
Norton GoBack is not compatible with some advanced features of
Windows XP that are usually associated with servers. Examples include
multiple processors, volume sets, dynamic disks, and striping.
When upgrading or changing operating systems, Norton GoBack should first be
disabled. Once Norton GoBack is disabled, the new operating system should be
installed or upgraded. Norton GoBack should then be enabled again.
Please note that Norton GoBack is currently not compatible with Microsoft Vista.
Using disk compression utilities
Norton GoBack is fully compatible with file level and/or folder level
compression, such as that provided by PKZIP, WINZIP, and ARJ. Norton GoBack is
also compatible with the file and folder compression built into Window XP.
However, disk and/or partition level compressed drives are not supported by
Norton GoBack (such as DriveSpace, DoubleSpace, and others). Dynamic Disk
Overlays (DDOs) are not supported nor recommended for Norton GoBack
installations. Examples include Ontrack's Disk Manager and StorageSoft's
EZ-Drive.
Drive support and device drivers
Norton GoBack does not protect floppy disks, Zip drives and other
removable media. Norton GoBack protects all disk drives that are recognized by
the basic input/output system (BIOS). If the disk drive is not recognized
during the initial BIOS identification phase of the boot process, or if it
requires special device drivers, Norton GoBack will not be enabled for that
drive. Norton GoBack, installed on your desktop computer does not protect data
on your laptop. Symantec recommends that you install Norton GoBack on every computer
system that you use.
Minimum History Buffer Size for NTFS partition
Norton GoBack selects optimal history buffer size during the Express installation that is
appropriate for most users. Advanced users might choose the Custom installation to define
the history buffer size themselves. For the NTFS partition, depending on the
size of the free space available, the system might not allow the set up of a
history buffer size larger than 60 percent of the available free space. An error
message will appear and guide you to a maximum history buffer size that is
calculated by the Norton GoBack
Using the clock in Norton GoBack's Advanced Disk Drive Restore and Disk Drive
Compare
If you change the time on the clock, close and reopen the window to display
accurate time stamps.
Using AutoBack in Safe Mode
Norton GoBack continues to protect your computer, even under Windows Safe Mode.
However, while in Safe Mode, you should disable the AutoBack feature
to avoid a possible system freeze. You can disable AutoBack from the
boot menu (by pressing the SPACEBAR during system startup).
Windows System Restore in Windows XP
Norton GoBack is compatible with the Windows System Restore feature in
Windows XP. On a Windows XP system, when Norton GoBack is installed,
System Restore is not disabled. In either case, if you choose to keep
Windows System Restore enabled while installing Norton GoBack, any attempt to
roll back your system to a System Restore Point created PRIOR to the
Norton GoBack installation might result in a fatal system error (blue screen).
You should delete all System Restore Points before you install Norton GoBack.
Or, you can disable Norton GoBack before you use System Restore. To restore to a
System Restore Point that is created after the installation of Norton GoBack, you do not
need to disable Norton GoBack for a system restore. Symantec recommends using
Norton GoBack to perform this type of activity because of the advanced
features and capabilities.
Restoring an image from the recovery environment when Norton GoBack is running
If you are going to restore an image from the recovery environment, and you are
running Norton GoBack, then you will need to disable Norton GoBack when booting
to the Recovery Disk.
How to save an MSI log file to troubleshoot installation and uninstallation issues
If Norton SystemWorks fails to install, Symantec recommends saving the
Norton SystemWorks log file that is generated by default during your
installation of Norton SystemWorks. This will help the Symantec Support Team
resolve your issue faster. After uninstalling Norton SystemWorks, there
should be two Norton SystemWorks log files. The Installation log file should
show an earlier date and time and a smaller KB size. The Uninstallation log file
should show a later date and time and a larger KB size.
To locate this log file:
1. Click "Start > Run"
2. Type the following command: "%temp%" and click "OK"
3. This should automatically launch the Windows temporary directory
4. Find a file called "Norton SystemWorks (Date) (Time).log".
How to add or remove any feature of Norton SystemWorks
1. Click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
2. Select "Norton SystemWorks (Symantec Corporation)"
3. Click "Change"
4. In the Set-up box, click "Modify"
5. Select any unchecked and/or checked feature to add or remove the features
then click "Next"
6. Click "Finish"
Upgrading your Operating System
When upgrading or changing operating systems, Norton GoBack should first be
disabled. Once Norton GoBack is disabled, the new operating system should be installed or
upgraded. Norton GoBack should then be enabled again.
Please note that this version of Norton SystemWorks is not compatible to Microsoft
Vista. It is advisable to uninstall Norton SystemWorks before upgrading to Microsoft
Vista.
Restoring your disk drive from the boot menu
If your computer is unable to start Windows, you can perform a Disk Drive
Restore before Windows starts. While restarting your computer, press the
spacebar as soon as you see the the Norton GoBack Boot Screen appear. From the
menu, click Restore Drive. Select a time and click Restore. A message appears
asking if you are sure you want to restore your disk drive. Click Yes. Your
computer restarts and your disk drive is restored to the selected time.
If you use Norton AntiVirus, click LiveUpdate and make sure your virus software
is up-to-date. If you use other antivirus protection, see the instructions
that came with it.
