1 Peter 1:13–15 (NRSV)
Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed.
Like obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires that you formerly had in ignorance.
Instead, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct...

King Belshazzar made a great festival for a thousand of his lords, and he was drinking wine in the presence of the thousand.
Under the influence of the wine, Belshazzar commanded that they bring in the vessels of gold and silver that his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines might drink from them.
So they brought in the vessels of gold and silver that had been taken out of the temple, the house of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines drank from them.
They drank the wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.

And this is the writing that was inscribed: Mene, Mene, Tekel, and Parsin.
This is the interpretation of the matter: Mene, God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end;
Tekel, you have been weighed on the scales and found wanting;
Peres, your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”

[A]s he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct...
We are set apart as God’s people, who have come near to God and presented ourselves to be filled by God and used by God.

*** Cont’d: A circular letter to churches. 1) Undergoing persecution; 2) A new identity—these gentiles have become a part of the family of God. They are identified as the people of God. “Gird the loins of your mind!” goes back to the Passover, “Gird your loins!” As Israel had the opportunity to glorify God by being God’s people, and were called to be holy as God is holy, the Church, too, has the call to reflect this set-apartness of God’s people. The language of Exile is used here.
Mental readiness: “Therefore prepare your minds for action...”
A well-ordered life: “Discipline yourself.”
Eyes raised to God: “Set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed.”
No & Yes: No — Not conformed to the ways of the world. Yes — Be characterized by being set apart for God’s use.
If you invoke as Father the one who judges...
Live in reverent fear.
Recognize the power and the preciousness of what the Lord has done for you!
How little people know who think that holiness is dull.
