“All with one consent” (with one thing in mind)

The Great Supper

This scripture has been preached to those who have made one excuse or another when it came to church, it has been taught in the way that Jesus meant it at that moment to say the children of Israel who were “God’s Chosen People” were losing their place at the table of the Wedding Supper at the end and that the gentile people would have that position .

I want to say yes to both teachings and that we as gentiles shouldn’t get too “comfortable” in that we have been invited by Jesus to His wedding supper we must remember that we too can  lose our place if we aren’t careful!

Luke 14:16-24KJV

16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: 17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. 18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. 19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. 20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. 21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. 22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. 23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. 24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

Jesus was asked to come to the home of a chief Pharisee to have dinner while He was there he began to teach all who would hear him.

1.    Verse 16-18 Who do you think will be at the Great Supper? Some imagine members of their families some think their church friends some reach as far as a few other churches but we don’t like to imagine too much but God has invited all to come!

a.        Verse 16 Bade many words often looked over by so many of us. But the man already sent initiations!

b.       Verse 17 This verse has something important! It shows they had accepted his invitation! He had told his servant to tell them it was time! Would the man send his servant to people who said no? Would he say “go to such house because they said they weren’t coming?

c.        Verse 18 All with one consent shows they weren’t just anyone they were together I believe Christ was not only talking about the Jews of the time I also think he spoke to Christians of this very day!

Ever invite someone to church have them say “yea I’ll be there” only to not see them ever?

Matthew 22:14KJV

14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

2.    Excuses excuses we love to make them!

a.        One said V18 I bought a piece of Ground I need to see it! Property and farming business can take time if we aren’t careful! I know a fine youth leader who lost his ministry over a job! God need’s to be the center of our lives no business or property or affair of life can go before God!

Luke 8:14KJV

14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.

b.      Another said in V19 I bought some oxen I want to prove them! Possessions can wreck Christian lives even Churches can suffer because of a love of the possessions we own. TV’s, cars, boats, houses any possession is just a thing! THINGS should never keep us from God!

1 John 2:15-16KJV

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

c.       Another man said he was too wrapped up in family matters to come! We can’t put anything or anyone above God! Nothing, property, money, possessions even our loved ones must not come before God! Instead let’s serve God together

Luke 14:33KJV

33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

3.    Excuses don’t help us.

a.       Was the master of the house happy with their answers? Would you be? He wasn’t just hurt he was angry! V21 when the servant told him of what had been said!

b.       Some like to think that if they aren’t ready for the Great Supper the Lord will just delay his coming change the date, be satisfied the next time but He told his servant to go find others! V22 when there was still room the master said to find more

c.        None of those who were bidden shall taste of my supper! V24 oh so many like to think that because they were called they shall make it somehow because of their former works they will be a part of that supper no matter that their lives no longer have place for God![1]
