How can we not in summer Psalms look at Psalms 22.
Once you get there that
your going to see all the capitalized pronouns
because it is a Psalm that is a deep deep
look at the Messiah
It describes Jesus suffering on the cross
this Psalm highlights the extent to which
Jesus identified with the human experience of suffering
While we cant not look at Psalms 22. Doing it justice is maybe impossible for any sermon.
Mentally we cant grasp what He went through
Physically - theres is no way of knowing
Emotionally- would be crying through this whole Psalms
as this Psalm
gives us insight in what
He went through on the cross for us.
It is heavy, it makes me feel speechless,
So we will mostly read
Ill share some details
we will respond to it with song.
pray
1 Song - to prepare hearts
Lets start by looking at the first 2 verses in this Psalm
lets just dive in.
there is no warm up here
it starts right off the bat heavy.

Why Have You Forsaken Me?

Psalm 22:1–2 NKJV
1 My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, And from the words of My groaning? 2 O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear; And in the night season, and am not silent.
One of the final words we read of Jesus
on the cross
in Matthew 27:46
Jesus says this prayer
in Aramaic his native tongue
“eloi Eloi, lama sabachthani”
translated My God, My God why have You forsaken Me.
he quotes this Psalm
As there was a significant moment
in which Jesus felt forsaken by God
the Father on the cross.
bearing our sins.
this Psalm highlights the extent to which
Jesus identified with the human experience of suffering
At this moment He experienced what He had not yet ever experienced.
2 cor 5:21
2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
After He says why have you forsaken me in verse one.
We see the continued question
“why are You so far from helping Me?
The answer: our own sin.
The Father that
had previously said, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased”
is now bearing our sins that separate us from God
But at this moment the Father wasn't displeased with the Son
because
Isaiah 53:10 (NKJV)
10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin...

....
I love how John the Baptist said
John 1:29 NKJV
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

I Am A Worm

In this next part together
it is a heavy section
that ultimately shows His love for us
in His suffering, agony.
it starts with this calling out to God
Psalm 22:3 NKJV
3 But You are holy, Enthroned in the praises of Israel.
Here He
recalls God and His greatness,
even when suffering.
He knew that his present agony did not change Gods holiness
(You are holy) or greatness.
so He recalls to God His faithfulness
Psalm 22:4–5 NKJV
4 Our fathers trusted in You; They trusted, and You delivered them. 5 They cried to You, and were delivered; They trusted in You, and were not ashamed.
He also recalls how God had answered
and delivered many times before.
this could have given some comfort
in knowing that He cried to the same God who had delivered before
and so He could deliver again;
it likely in this moment it brought on despair:
despair, knowing that the God who had delivered before
now seems so distant and silent.
This is describing probably the most painful moments on the cross
as He is bearing our sins
His body broken
His mind - submitting to the will of the Father, in Love, bearing the stress, and pain
His soul - bearing our sins.
and to make matters worse we read in :
Psalm 22:6–8 NKJV
6 But I am a worm, and no man; A reproach of men, and despised by the people. 7 All those who see Me ridicule Me; They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 8 “He trusted in the Lord, let Him rescue Him; Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!”
In all His suffering then He is also mocked.
Theres no compassion towards Him.
the One so compassionate He is suffering for Us.
How low He must have felt here.
This is our Savior.
experiencing our sin
laying upon Him.
He isn't just saying this
He is expereincing it
it continues
lets look into this next section.

PT. 3 - My Heart is Like Wax

Psalm 22:9–15 NKJV
9 But You are He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust while on My mother’s breasts. 10 I was cast upon You from birth. From My mother’s womb You have been My God. 11 Be not far from Me, For trouble is near; For there is none to help. 12 Many bulls have surrounded Me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled Me. 13 They gape at Me with their mouths, Like a raging and roaring lion. 14 I am poured out like water, And all My bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It has melted within Me. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death.
this sections started with the womb and ends with “to the dust of death.”
He reminded God of the care given since His very earliest days.
and is now surrounded by bulls.
The bull is the symbol of brutal strength,
that gores and tramples down all before it
If you are surrounded by Bulls
probably one of the insticnts kicks in to run, hide, or fight
Jesus says here:
in this description of His human suffering:
I am poured out like water: feels completely empty.
Whatever strength or resistance
He had was poured out like water upon the ground.
His bones are out of joint
I picture His hanging there, arms stretched out
having to pull himself up to breathe
His heart is melted like wax.
There is also some reason to believe (based mainly on John 19:34) that on the cross Jesus suffered from a ruptured heart, making the words “My heart is like wax; it has melted within Me” also amazingly specific.
but His description here shows that
In His physical human suffering, He has lost strength
**His tongue clings to His jaws - He is dehydrated.
Physically brought down to the dust of death.
he describes more ...

PT. 4 - They Pierced My Hands and My Feet.

Psalm 22:16–18 NKJV
16 For dogs have surrounded Me; The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet; 17 I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me. 18 They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.
We dont have time to read John 19:24–37, but it shows the
dogs surrounding him - Roman solideris
His crucifixion - - all this described 1,000 years before it happened
- there wasnt an execution by crucifixion at this point.
what incredible detail here that they pierce His hands and feet.
In John 19 it shows how Jesus bones were not broken
That they divided up His garments and cast lots for them
It describes even his thirst that we read v.28
In Ps 22. it shares that they look and stare at me
There was the dogs, and wicked,
amongst them was one that recognized Jesus to being the son of God
and some of the woman were present like His own mom (John 19)
which i love that in His suffering He asks John to look after His mother.
The detail this Psalm 22 gives is amazing.
Remember its more just prophecy
its describing His suffering.
before we look at His final cry for help
Megan
Lets remember that He did this for us
because He loves us!
Ephesians 5:2 NKJV
2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.
John 3:16 NKJV
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

read
Psalm 22:19–21 NKJV
19 But You, O Lord, do not be far from Me; O My Strength, hasten to help Me! 20 Deliver Me from the sword, My precious life from the power of the dog. 21 Save Me from the lion’s mouth And from the horns of the wild oxen! You have answered Me.
In His suffering,
pierced, surrounded, stripped,
Haters, scoffers, and mockers surrounded Jesus on the cross
and desired to make His suffering worse
He looks to God and asks for
Help, Deliverance, Save me
then we see that at the end of verse 21
at the end is a victory in His call to help!
“You have answered Me”
this will change the tone of this Psalm to praise.

PT. 5 - Nations shall worship before You

from this point on the Psalm moves from a Lament to Praise
which is still a Psalm pointing to Jesus.
Hebrews 2:12 quotes the second half of Psalm 22 (specifically, Psalm 22:22), proving clearly that the entire psalm points to Jesus, not just the agony of the first half.
Just before Jesus was crucified and was praying in garden he said in John 17:26
John 17:26 (NKJV)
26 And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it,...
now lets read
Psalm 22:22–23 NKJV
22 I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You. 23 You who fear the Lord, praise Him! All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, And fear Him, all you offspring of Israel!
Before: help me, deliver me, save me
Now, because the Father has heard Me:
praise him (v.22)
fear him (v.23)
glorify Him (v.23)
Because the Father has Heard
the relationship has been restored
and so we read
Psalm 22:24–31 NKJV
24 For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from Him; But when He cried to Him, He heard. 25 My praise shall be of You in the great assembly; I will pay My vows before those who fear Him. 26 The poor shall eat and be satisfied; Those who seek Him will praise the Lord. Let your heart live forever! 27 All the ends of the world Shall remember and turn to the Lord, And all the families of the nations Shall worship before You. 28 For the kingdom is the Lord’s, And He rules over the nations. 29 All the prosperous of the earth Shall eat and worship; All those who go down to the dust Shall bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep himself alive. 30 A posterity shall serve Him. It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation, 31 They will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born, That He has done this.
the last verse is us!
we are the the people to be born!
to hear of His righteousness, (Jesus)
This section shows the praise, worship,
God
and declaring His work
it reminds me of what we read in Philippians 2:9-11
Philippians 2:9–11 NKJV
9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
So The first half of this Psalm is to
bring us to this next half of the Psalm.
His suffering
Brings us to praise, declaration, worship
Megan
Gospel message:
Why Did Jesus suffer?
Because He loves
Hebrews 2:9 NKJV
9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.
He died so we can live!
Look at what He was willing to go through for us
He really is a God of love.
While I was a sinner He did that for me
Now we are children of God
Oh what manner of Love, that He has bestowed on us
that we should be called Children of God
May we leave comforted by His love
and in thanks towards Jesus
