INTRO: What is the foundation of God’s plan of salvation? The foundation is God’s covenant and His faithfulness in fulfilling the covenant. Therefore, the Biblical ideal of covenant is one of the most significant themes in the Bible.
The covenant shows God’s desire to have a personal relationship with humanity.
About Relationship The primary focus of a contract is the transaction of assets between parties. A covenant, however, is required when people who are not naturally related desire to have an intimate relationship.
Central Expression of the Biblical Covenant: “I will be your God, and you will be my people.”
God’s Covenant with Abraham God promised to make him into a great nation, to bless him, to make his name great, to bless those who bless him, to curse those who cursed him, and to bless the families of the earth through him:
Genesis 12:2–3 NKJV
I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Called of God; Covenant Instituted Called of God
Genesis 12:1–5 NKJV
Now the Lord had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan.
