God’s Justice

remember when we was in chapter 6 Jesus gave a sermon about what the people looked like that were in the kingdom of God?

He spoke about trees and shrubs

and about the fruit that grew on them

good fruit bad fruit

then Luke demonstrated a person that was a perfect picture of a person that is in the Kingdom of God

So now he is doing the same thing

V 29-30

Luke has been telling us about 2 groups of people

the ones who were baptized by John

acknowledging their sin and need of repentance

then we have the religious leaders the Pharisees and the scribes

they were too good to allow themselves to be baptized by John

they considered themselves sinless and worthy to be in God’s presence

Well Luke is going to personalize these 2 groups

1 Simon the Pharisee

2 A woman who is a sinner

we will look at the differences between these two people

read Luke 7 36-50

Simon the Good Guy

Simon thinks he is a saint

V 36

The Pharisees have a big dislike for Jesus

they have started the talks about eliminating him

Jesus draws huge crowds, heals people

Jesus does not follow the rules of the pharisees

the pharisees and scribes are trying to trap Jesus into doing something wrong so that they can condemn Him

Simon is a Pharisee V 40

Invited Jesus to dinner a continues invitation

a Historical interlude

when someone invites a prestigious guest to dinner

the host will

give a kiss to give honor

will offer cool water for the guest to wash his feet

or wash the guest’s feet

offer anointing oil for relief of the hot dry climate

Simon did none of these things for Jesus

not showing the respect that he ought

showing disdain for Jesus

I think that Simon was trying to trap Jesus

Simon was a good person in his own eyes

he is self justified

by his standards he has found himself not guilty

on the other hand we now have

The Sinner

V 37

a woman who was

at the writing of this book being a sinner was in the past

a sinner / an immoral woman / possibly a prostitute

a person that a pharisee would not even touch / she was unclean

she found out the Savior is going to be at Simons house

so she grabbed her alabaster bottle and came to the house

when a teacher dines at someones house

people can come and go asking questions or just to listen

they will sit on the couches on the perimeter of the room

the woman coming in would not be something unheard of

V 38

standing behind Him

the feet are furthest from the table

she had come to bring to Jesus her most precious possession

she weeped because of her sin and shame

she weeped because of her need of forgiveness

she shed tears onto Jesus feet

she washed the feet of Jesus

and wiped them with her hair

a woman’s hair is always up and in a hair thing

after a wedding a brides hair is only seen by the husband

here on this day Jesus was the only person in the room

She had only crying eyes for Jesus

Kissing the feet of Jesus

and pouring out her costly perfume onto the feet of Jesus

is Jesus important to her?

does She know Jesus as Divine? the Christ?

does she know that Jesus Saves?

does she know that Jesus forgives?

I think she does how?

And Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.

this woman realized her sin / her need

V 29 acknowledges God’s justice is good

so she came to her redeemer

with tears she fell at his feet

and sought forgiveness

Psalm 51. 1-10

But The Pharisee

V 39

If this man is a prophet/ which is apparent that He is not

He would know that this woman should not be touching Him

that she is defiling Him

this is totally against the norms

V 40 -43 Jesus reply to Simons thoughts

V 44-46 a rebuke

V 47 Jesus sums up the parable

loves much

loves little do we love little?

Revelation 2:4 LSB

‘But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.

our first love is Jesus

do you show love to your Savior?

do you wash his feet with your tears and wipe them with your hair

do you lavish onto Jesus your prised possession

how do you show Jesus that you love Him

are you like the Pharisee? who did not show his guest a proper greeting?

its time to look into your heart and acknowledge the truth.

then Jesus turns and talks directly to the woman

Pronounces Salvation

V 48 sins forgiven

V 50 saved by faith,

Peace with God is given

the only way to have peace with God is to be righteous

and the only way to be righteous is for Jesus to give us His righteousness

this woman was a sinner

God’s word will never call her a sinner again

the Bible never calls a born again believer a sinner

they are called Beloved

Saint A member of Christ body

Chosen Adopted

Elect Holy

Child of God God’s co-worker

In Christ God’s Workmanship

never a sinner. your sins, all of them are forgiven

you are under the headship of Jesus now

you stand before the Father as Righteous

A new person with a clean heart

you are no longer under the headship of Adam

in whom all are fall short of the glory of God

I don’t like when a saved person calls themselves a sinner

so don’t do it

You are a saint not because you have done great deeds for God

but because God has done great deeds for you and to you

and has declared you a saint
