Awake

I Corinthians 15:34

This morning I want to study a verse that really convicted me and challenged me to be a better Christian and a better witness.

Paul here is speaking to the church at Corinth. As he goes through the 15th chapter he is talking about the truth of the resurrection of Jesus and gives proofs of it in verses 1-11 and then goes on to talk about the importance of the resurrection in vs. 12-19 and then goes on to talk about the order of the resurrection in verses 20-33 and then there is sort of a shift in to verse 34. He then switches and talks about awaking to righteousness. Tonight the purpose of this message is to awake us to righteousness.

Awake to Righteousness

Awake- : to make active : to stir up an experience that awoke old memories

Righteousness - Purity of heart and rectitude of life; conformity of heart and life to the divine law.

We need to wake up to righteousness

There are some people who need to wear a label round their necks to show that they are Christians at all, or else we might mistake them for sinners, their actions are so like those of the ungodly. - Charles Spurgeon

Romans 13:11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

When to awake: Now it is high time to awake (v. 11), to awake out of the sleep of sin (for a sinful condition is a sleeping condition), out of the sleep of carnal security, sloth and negligence, out of the sleep of spiritual death, and out of the sleep of spiritual deadness; both the wise and foolish virgins slumbered and slept, Mt. 25:5 . We have need to be often excited and stirred up to awake

While the verse we are looking at today is to the church of Corinth there is a verse for the unsaved to "awake also"

Ephesians 5:14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest,(Unbeliever) and arise from the dead(dead in sin), and Christ shall give thee light(knowledge of salvation).

We need to have a good testimony among the saved and the unsaved.

The Bible that most people will read is a Christian, so live like a Christian and not like the world

It is better to die in the struggle for righteousness than to live in the midst of evil. Raymond Barber

I John 2:15-17 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. We need to chose who we will serve

Joshua 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord , choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord .

Matthew 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

We cannot serve two god, we have to choose to serve God or to choose to serve sin, You cannot be lukewarm like the church of Laodoceia

Some people do not have the knowledge of God

It is sad today in the world we live in that there are millions of people in the world who do not have a knowledge of God.

The reason I believe this is true is because I have talked to teenagers that have no idea of who God is.

This is because churches have turned away from Preaching Christ and have turned to just preach a Christian book store theology.

This is killing our churches Constant practical preaching has killed churches all across our country

Real doctrine produces a burden for evangelism If we do not preach the truth than who will

We need to be a gospeller and not a gossiper

Some people though willingly deny that there is a God. The Bible calls those people foolish Psalm 14:1The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

This is Christians fault

If we truly believe in God then we need to tell others

We need to get a burden for lost souls

We need to beware of false doctrine, that's what was killing this church and is killing churches today

We need to be more sold out for Christ than any other thing in the world

As we get closer to the Lords return we need to have a great burden to share the Gospel

There is a great song that says " for all he's done i want to lift my hands and praise, for all he's done i want to live my life to please him, even though I don't deserve to live my life has just begun, so i cant help but praise the lord for all he's done"

That should be our attitude

I do not want to go before God some day and hear depart from me he workers of iniquity, I never knew you I want to go before God and here well done thy good and faithful servant

We must have a burden for the lost, if we don’t who will?

Conclusion

are you awake this morning to the things of God?

Be careful not to fall asleep in your sin
