What do I believe God wants them to know? That God is compassionate
Why? It shows God’s heart
What do I believe God wants them do? Embrace God’s compassion and be compassionate like Him
Why? It fills us with love and others with love
INTRO/ME/WE
We have been in series almost all summer called “REPEATED WORDS” where we are discovering some of the most repeated words of the Bible…that there are dozens of words that God says/writes not in just one book of the Bible but in most or all books of the Bible.
Things such as God’s love
Redemption
Reclaim and rename us
The reason God repeats this is for emphasis and importance…God repeats things, just like us, that we want someone to KNOW IN THEIR HEART, MIND, SOUL
THIS IS WHY WE SAY “I LOVE YOU” TO THE PERSON WE LOVE…IT IS NOT THAT THEY DON’T KNOW IT…BUT WE WANT TO REMIND THEM THAT WE LOVE
OR WHAT I DO AS A SCHOOL TEACHER, IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD FULL OF BOYS, AND AT HOME
WE SAY WORDS THAT BUILD UP NOT TEAR DOWN
God repeats things He wants us to know....son, daughter, person created in the image of God
WHICH BRINGS ME TO MY NEXT POINT
NOT ONLY DOES GOD REPEAT WORDS FOR EMPHASIS AND IMPORTANCE
WE LEARNED THAT WORDS CARRY WEIGHT…
words are no mere words
some carry more weight than others
All us in this room or online have been BUILT up by WORDS…someone giving you an encouraging word or completement…someone saying you are gifted, you matter, you are loved
WE have also had the opposite happen
WE have been torn down by words…somebody said something nasty to you
Proverbs 18:21 ESV
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.
We see this verse being true all the way at the beginning of creation
God speaks…let there be light, life,
Devil speaks…and there is death
THIS WEEK WE ARE GOING TO TAKE THOSE 2 THOUGHTS THE POWER OF WORDS AND REPEATING OF WORDS AND OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL WEEKS GO THROUGH THE MOST REPEATED, QUOTE VERSE IN ALL THE BIBLE
AS AN INTRO TO THE TRANSITION TO THIS SECTION I AM GOING TO ASK A QUESTION:
Anybody every meet someone new before either by yourself or you are going with a friend to meet their friend?
What are some of the questions you have when you meet that person that you ask?
Where do you live?
Where do you work?
What do you do for fun?
Tell me about your family?
You are trying to know that person, make a connection
There is also a question that is greater than all these questions that we almost never say but never wonder
It is the question we ask our friend before we meet there friend
anyone know what that question is?
What is this person like? It is a character quesiton
You can ask your friend Jon before you meet his friend Ben
He is a great guy, encourager, fun to be around
We have had the other question I am going to prepare you Eric is a little rude, has an anger issue
It is one the greatest, if not the greatest question we wonder about a person.
It doesn’t matter where they live or how much money they have if they are mean
right?
no amount of money can cover someone’s character
Why do I bring this up? What’s Pastor Pete’s point?
This is the question we all have about God
WHAT IS GOD LIKE?
THIS QUESTION IS SO BIG THAT HOW WE ANSWER WILL SHAPE OUR LIFE
What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. ... Worship is pure or base as the worshiper entertains high or low thoughts of God. For this reason the gravest question before the Church is always God Himself, and the most portentous fact (PROPHETIC FACT) about any man is not what he at a given time may say or do, but what he OR SHE DEEP IN THERE heart conceives God to be like. We tend by a secret law of the soul to move toward our mental AND BELIEVED image of God. This is true not only of the individual Christian, but of the company of Christians that composes the Church. Always the most revealing thing about the Church is her idea AND BELIEF of God,
WE KNOW THIS ON THE PRACTICE LEVEL
BIG GOD…SMALL PROBLEMS
SMALL GOD…BIG PROBLEMS
GOD AS FATHER…LOVING
GOD AS JUDGE…SCARED, RUN AWAY
THIS IS QUESTION THAT IS BEFORE US TODAY: WHAT IS GOD LIKE???
THIS IS THE QUESTION THE MOST QUOTED VERSE IN ALL THE BIBLE ANSWERS
THIS IS A CRITIALLY IMPORATANT QUESTION ESPECIALLY IN THE WORLD WE LIVE IN THAT SAYS
I CAN TELL YOU WHAT GOD IS LIKE
OLD FASHION: OUT OF DATE: NOT RELAVENT…WE ARE ENLIGHTED NOW
ABSENT: DISTENT: NOT PRESENT
ABSUSVIE: MEAN: JUDGE
IT IS THE QUESTION THAT THE ENEMY TRIES TO GET US TO ANSWER INCORRECTLY ALL THE TIME
BECAUSE AN INCORRECT VIEW OF GOD LEADS TO LACK, LACK OF COURAGE, ENOURAGMENT, LOVE, LIFE
WHAT IS THE MOST QUOTE VERSE IN ALL OF SCRIPTURE? GOD TELLS MOSES AFTER HE WRITES THE 10 WORD, 10 INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO LIVE...
THIS IS WHO I AM
Exodus 34:6–7 ESV
The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
SEE WHAT GOD SAYS
I AM COMPASSIONATE
I AM GRACIOUS
I AM SLOW TO ANGER
I AM ABOUDING IN LOVE
I AM ABOUDING IN FAITHFULNESS
YEAH, BUT YOU ALSO WILL NOT CLEAR THE GUILTY!!! SEE YOUR MEAN
Hebrews found comfort in this verse
5 amazing things and 1 not so good thing and we focus on the 1 not so good thing and say “ahay, ahay”
See I told you God is mean
So you would rather be 5 positive things and never deal with injustice?
No, that is what are saying
The reason why the Hebrews found this verse so encouraging is that it states how great God is in 5 verse but also gives them an assurance I am not going to let injustice rain.
WE ARE GOING TO DIVE INTO THE FIRST WORD: RACH-HUMM
THE WORD FOR COMPASION
TO HELP US UNDERSTAND THIS BETTER IS TO GO TO THE HEBREW ROOT SYSTEM FOR RACH-HUM
: IN HEBREW THEY USED RELEATED WORDS TO CARRY A DEEPER MEANINNG
WALK HALAK SHARES SAME ROOT AS MESSENGER AND KING
What is interesting it is the rightoues people who HALAK with God
Enouch, Noah, Abraham
WHAT IS IS THE HEBREW ROOT SYSTEM FOR RACH-HUMM?
RECKHEM
THIS IS HOW AN EASTERNER WOULD READ THIS
What is the word Reckhem in Hebrew?
the most motherly organ in a woman’s body…WHAT IS THAT?: WOMB…IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT COMPASSION IS LOOK AT WOMAN WHO IS PREGANT…LOOK HOW SHE IS WITH HER CHILD....
How is she with her child??? Compassion
If you want to know the compassion God is talking about here is look at compassion a woman has for her child
I am not saying God is a woman…he is not a a woman but God is saying “you want to know how I feel about you???”
You know how a woman feels about a child in her womb, you know the compassion and love she has
THAT IS HOW I FEEL ABOUT YOU
MY COMPASSION TO YOU IS SO DEEP…SO FOUNDATIONALLY ONE OF THE BEST DESCRIPTIONS I HAVE FOR IT IS LIKE THE COMPASSION A MOTHER FEELS TOWARDS THE BABY IN THE WOMB
IT IS NOT TRUE JUST IN THE OLD TESTAMENT AND ALSO TRUE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT.
THERE IS A SIMILAR WORDS USED FOR COMPASSION AND WE WILL SEE A FEW EXAMPLES
JESUS USES A SIMILAR WORD IN GREEK THAT SHOWS COMPASSION: IT IS SPLAGNCHONON IT REFERES TO THE INNER BOWLS
ANYBODY HAVE THAT?
YOU ARE SO MOVED WITH COMPASSION THAT YOUR INSIDES FELL IT
Or WHEN HIS LAZARUS DIES JESUS IS MOVED TO COMPASSION
WE HAVE BEEN THERE
SPLAGCHON IS WHAT JESUS HAD TOWARD THE LOST AND WOUNDED..
THEY ARE NOW HOW THEY SHOULD BE
Matthew 9:35–38 ESV
And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
I GOT TO HEAL, I HAVE GOT TO HELP, I HAVE TO LIBERATE
AND MORE AND MORE PEOPLE CAME
SEND OUT MORE PEOPLE WITH COMPASSION
D.L. MOODY HAD TOWARDS THE CITY OF CHICAGO…HE WOULD CRY AS HE SAW THE LOST SOULS
COMPASSION IS WHAT WE SEE JESUS ILLISTARATE WHEN A LAWEYER A PERSON OF THE LAW COMES TO CHALLENGE JESUS
Luke 10:25 ESV
And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
TO TEST IS NOT GOOD, BECAUSE YOU ARE GUILITY UNTIL PROVINE INNOCENT
Luke 10:26–27 ESV
He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
YOU KNOW THE LAW AND NOW GO DO IT
YOU
Luke 10:29 ESV
But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
OH JESUS, I HAVE NAILED IT…ANYBODY DONE THAT BEFORE??
Luke 10:30–32 ESV
Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
THE PEOPLE WHO WERE TO SHOW SPLACGON.
WE DON’T KNOW WHY?
TO BUSY
GOT TO WORSHIP
Luke 10:33 ESV
But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion.
SPLANCH-NON
WHEN YOU HAVE SPLANCH-NON YOU CANNOT JUST STAY THERE
Luke 10:34–35 ESV
He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’
WHY DID HE GIVE HIM MONEY??
TO TAKE CARE OF THE WOUNDS, YES
WHAT HAPPENS IF HE TOOK CARE OF THE MAN AND HE DIDN’T HAVE THE MONEY? THEY WOULD BECOME A SLAVED UNTIL THEY COULD PAY IT OFF
Luke 10:36–37 ESV
Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”
WHAT GOD IS SAYING I AM THE GOD OF COMPASSION…SPLANCH-NON AND MAY WE BE AS WELL
