I. A man by the name of Lazarus got really sick and ended up dying.

11 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.

Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.

Because of this he ended up being put somewhere.

II. There are many that are dead spirtually speaking due to sin.

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

Because of this they are in the spirtual sense lying in a grave.

III. If this is the case, which it is, then what are we to do as the church?

I mean if we are dealing with dead people spirtually what do we need to do. We have dead people everywhere.
Will in order to see this we need to look at what Jesus did. This story of Lazarus is astounding because it has such relevance for us practically speaking.

i. One of the first things you see Jesus do is ask “the people” to “do” something.

When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. 34 And he said, “Where have you laid him?”

38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.”

The stone. You put it there you take it out of the way.
The stone that is on this tomb is the stone of writing people off.
i. Writing people off because of past mistakes.
ii. Writing people off because they rubbed you the wrong way.
ii. Writing people off because of current lifestyles.
iii. Writing people off because of how long they have been there.

ii. One of the second things you see Jesus do is tell “the people” to “have” something.

38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone.

He stinks because he has been there so long. He has been in this position so long we have given up hope of a miracle of life.
He has been addicted so long.
He has been hardened so long.
He has been influenced so long.
He has been away so long.
He has not talked to me so long.

iii. The third thing you see Jesus do is act on something.

Once the stones are moved. Once what is blocking them is taken out of the way by the people that put it there. That is when jesus does one of the greatest miracles that is found in the entirety of the Bible.

So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man who had died came out,

iv. The fourth thing you see jesus do is ask “the people” to “do” one more thing.

The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

It is a marvel it is a mystery. But God uses His church.
I am going to send you forth.

And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.

14 Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. 15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
