Intro

Welcome back. Last week we talked about being unified, and we talked about in order to be unified we have to start by having a saving relationship with Jesus, and then that we need to trust God that He will complete His plans in our lives.
Well this week we are going to look into Chapter 2 and this chapter continues on from where we left off with unity, where now Paul transitions into talking about Humility.
Philippians 2:1–4 NIV
Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
So from this passage we see Paul first reinforcing unity, but then He continues and transitions into Humility.

Humility

What is humility?
modest opinion or estimate of one's own importance, rank, etc.
Who do you think of when you here the word humility?
As I was thinking through examples of humility found in the Bible the best example I could think of was Jesus, and there was one story in particular that stood out to me.
What stood out to me was Jesus washing the disciples feet
John 13:2–5 NIV
The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
Washing the peoples feet was the job for the lowliest of servants, and yet here we see Jesus the master and teacher take on the lowest position.

So thats the example I thought of whenever I was thinking of humility however Paul had a different example.
Philippians 2:5–8 NIV
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!
So now that Paul has described humility in a way that no one can refute Paul then transitions into what should be a natural result of humility.

Willingness to serve

The natural result of humility that Paul shows here is a willingness to serve others.
Philippians 2:12–15 NIV
Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky
The part here that sticks out to me is in the middle where it mentions Do everything without grumbling or arguing.
Yes that even includes your homework, and chores, because we have been called by God to be different than the people around us

What is your motivation?

However Paul also finishes this chapter up with a little bit of a warning or a wake up call.
Philippians 2:21 NIV
For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.
So what is our motivation? as we are serving we have to make sure that we are not just serving to make ourselves look good, but to make sure that we have the proper motives.
