Shame is a confusing feeling
It can be debilitating and crippling
It can also lead us to repentance
But first, what is shame?

self-depreciation
In a nutshell, shame is exposure
We see shame displayed in Lamentations
We see shame displayed in Lamentations
Lamentations 1:8 (ESV)
Jerusalem sinned grievously;
therefore she became filthy;
all who honored her despise her,
for they have seen her nakedness;
she herself groans
and turns her face away.

All who pass along the way
clap their hands at you;
they hiss and wag their heads
at the daughter of Jerusalem:
“Is this the city that was called
the perfection of beauty,
the joy of all the earth?”

“They shall stay with us no longer.”

“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
“therefore I will hope in him.”
I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see.
So what do we do?

Be honest with our shame
God is the only healthy relief we have from shame
And His people need to provide that relief
