“Honest” is the translation of a word which was used in classical Greek in the sense of “venerable, inviting reverence, worthy of reverence.”

The word “virtue” in the Greek text was used in classical Greek for any mental excellence, moral quality, or physical power. Paul studiously avoids it. Only here does he use it. It seems that the apostle includes it in order that he may not omit any possible ground of appeal.

Again Here in Philippians Paul is saying recognize where the thought is coming from AND put into it’s proper place

If we are going to walk in the peace of God we will learn how to focus on the good that can come from circumstances or trials
James 1:2-3 “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.”
OR we need to focus on all the potential for Good.
This can be a massive change of prospective. THE REALITY THAT GOD IS GOOD AND HE CAN USE ALL THING IN OUR LIVES FOR HIS GLORY. ITS FOR OUR GOOD.
This understanding keeps me from acting like a big baby when I do not understand.

Paul not only taught these things(chapter 1 the gospel being furthered through his suffering. but lived the mindset in chapter 2 and 3 ) rejoicing the Lord always.

Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
