Read Hebrews 9:1-4

Transition
The first covenant was not worthless or pointless.
God gave it, and He does nothing that is worthless or pointless.
Through it He prescribed certain kinds of worship and a special place in which to worship. But it was temporary
They were ordained of God and give a beautiful, meaningful, detailed picture of the eternal Messiah.
The writer of Hebrews makes many comparisons.
He has compared the prophets, the angels, Joshua, and Aaron to Christ—always pointing out and proving Christ’s superiority.
But he never depreciates the persons or the things he compares with Christ or with Christ’s work.
Quite to the contrary, he magnifies them and praises them. In doing so, he exalts Christ all the more.
The more the other persons and things are legitimately magnified, the more Jesus is magnified, the more superior He is shown to be.
The regulations of divine worship, the rites and ceremonies, were instituted by God to help show His Son, the Messiah, the true Savior.
They were divine services, but they were also temporary services, performed in a temporary sanctuary

Old Covenant Worship vs. 1-5

The Old Covenant worship was

vs. 1-2 Daily Worship

God ordained worship under the old covenant
In the wilderness God commanded Moses to erect a tabernacle that was similar to the Sanctuary in Heaven
Exodus 25:8 ESV
And let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst.
There was an outer court where the Levites performed the daily sacrifices
In that outer court were the lampstand and the table with the showbread on it
The purpose of the tabernacle was that God’s presence would be in the midst of his people
In the wilderness the tabernacle was in the middle of the camp and all of the tribes camped around it in a big circle
God always wants his presence to be at the center of our life
We worship to give God the worth he is due, but it is also to enter into his presence

vs. 3-5 Veiled Presence

Under the old covenant the tabernacle had two chambers
The outer chamber is where the sacrifices happened
The inner chamber is where the ark of the covenant resided
It was called the Holy Place because that is where God’s presence resided
The ark was surrounded by a tall thick veil
In the holy of holies was the golden altar of incense and the ark
The ark had some interesting articles
There was an urn which held the manna that Israel gathered in the wilderness
Donuts are holy
The ark also had Aaron’s staff that budded
The final item were the 10 commandments on stone tablets
On top of the Ark was the Mercy seat
This was the cover of the ark and it represented God’s throne on earth
His presence resided here
God told Moses to send Aaron before the Mercy Seat on the Day of Atonement to sprinkle the blood of sacrifices
He was to bring incense with so that he doesn’t die

A New Kind of Worship vs. 6-10

With Jesus as our high priest we enter a new kind of worship
The old was based on rituals
The new is based on the Spirit and intimacy

vs. 6-7 Worship w/ Fear & Trembling

The priests weren’t allowed to go into the presence of God, let alone the people
While the priests ministered in the outer court on a daily basis the high priest was only allowed to go into the inner court once a year
Leviticus 16:34 ESV
And this shall be a statute forever for you, that atonement may be made for the people of Israel once in the year because of all their sins.” And Aaron did as the Lord commanded Moses.
The high priest would go in with a blood sacrifice on the day we know as Yom Kippur
Yom Kippur always happens in the fall and just took place last Sunday and Monday
Yom kippur means day of atonement
It is considered the holiest day of the year for Israel
Imagine how the High Priest felt on that day
I’m sure he was excited, but he was also filled with fear and trembling
He had to wear bells on the bottom of his robe to signal he was still moving
They attached a rope around his ankle just in case God struck him down and they had to pull him out
This was not they way that God intended for worship to happen
Worship wasn’t meant to be filled with fear

vs. 8 Holy Spirit holds the Key

In vs 8 we see a precurser to god’s plans
The Holy Spirit is the way into the presence of the Lord
Under the Old Covenant, the ability to enter the holy of holies was not yet open
Once Jesus died on the cross access was granted because the veil was torn
Hebrews 10:19–20 (ESV)
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh,
God wanted us to have complete access to Him because he knows that his presence is where the power is
The key to true worship is the Holy Spirit
The samaritan woman at well asked Jesus what mountain was the right one to worship on because the Jews and the Samaritans argued over the holy place
Jesus replied, one day you will worship in spirit and truth
It’s not where you worship but how you worship
Worship in the spirt means to enter into the presence of God

vs. 9-10 Old methods won’t work

Old methods won’t work
Sacrifices can’t clear your conscience
Regulations only keep you in line, they don’t usher you into the presence of God
Galatians 3:21 ESV
Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law.

Good Things to Come vs. 11-15

Now we get to the good part
Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come
Wouldn’t you like to put that on a business cards?
I am the priest of good things to come
What are these good things?
I see four good things that come from Jesus Being our high priest

vs. 11 The Perfect sanctuary

The first is that we get to enjoy a perfect sanctuary
Through the Spirit we get to experience the presence of God
There’s nothing better
It’s Made w/o hands
Ephesians 1:3–4 ESV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love
In this perfect sanctuary are the spiritual blessings
It’s greater than anything human hands can make

vs. 12 Eternal Redemption

The second good thing we see is eternal redemption
Christ entered into the holy place, once for all, by the means of his own blood
Before the High Priest had to enter and sprinkle the blood of goats and bulls on the mercy seat
But Jesus shed his blood on the cross and it secured our eternal redemption
What is redemption?

The act of buying back or rescuing something or someone that was lost, enslaved, or in a state of bondage

Redemption of property and slaves by a kinsman-redeemer was the most common form of redemption in the Old Testament.
This kinsman-redeemer was a close male relative from the same clan.
Galatians 4:4–5 (ESV)
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.
This redemption is for eternity

vs. 13 Sanctified

The third good thing to come is that we are sanctified
Sacrifices sanctified the flesh, but Jesus sanctifies the soul
Sanctification: The devoting or setting apart of anything to the worship or service of God
When you choose to follow Jesus you are set apart by God
There is a precedent for this
Sundays are set aside for the Worship of the Lord
Genesis 2:3 ESV
So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.
You have been set apart to worship the Lord
Romans 12:1–2 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

vs. 14 Purify Our Conscience

The final good thing that comes from Jesus being our high priest is that he purifies our conscience
Cleansing our consciences cannot be done by some external ceremony; it demands an internal power.
Our conscience is a wonderful tool from God. But it isn’t perfect.
Our conscience can be seared (1 Timothy 4:2).
Our conscience can be defiled (Titus 1:15).
Our conscience can be evil (Hebrews 10:22).
To Serve the Living God
The believer is cleansed, conscience and all, not to live unto himself but to serve the living God.
Luke 1:68 ESV
“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people
Luke 1:74–75 (ESV)
that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.
